Abstract

Oral history interview with Laura Sussman and Wendy Kraft conducted by Barbara Tabach on February 17, 2016 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Sussman and Kraft talk about being business partners in Kraft-Sussman Funeral Home, which caters to the Jewish community. They also talk about the local LGBT community as a lesbian couple.

Las Vegas, Nevada Women's Softball Collection

Abstract

The Las Vegas, Nevada Women's Softball Collection (1951-1952) contains photographic prints and negatives depicting a southern Nevada women's softball team. The team was sponsored by Wilson's Texaco Station in Boulder City, Nevada, and the women played in regional games in both southern California and southern Nevada. Photographs in the collection show the team practicing at Peterson Field in Boulder City, and celebrating and spending time together at the Mt. Charleston Lodge. The collection also contains copies of personal accounts written by team member Orpha Alveta Bowman (McBride), who recalls the prejudice some of the lesbian members faced from local community members. The originals of these handwritten accounts are held in MS-01099.

The National Association of Lesbians & Gays, a non-profit corporation based in Reno, Nevada, published the newsletter Gay Life beginning in 1984. The name of the newsletter changed to Stonewall! Voice in August, 1985.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Edmund Uehling and Marlon Tinana conducted by Dennis McBride on March 14, 21, and 22, 2000 for the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Archives Oral History Project. In the first interview, Uehling discusses his early life in Boulder City, Nevada, his time as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, becoming aware of his sexuality, and his involvement with the founding of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada in 1992. In the second interview, Uehling and Tinana discuss investing in Las Vegas, Nevada gay community real estate beginning in 1988. They also discuss purchasing and managing business properties, including the Gipsy and The Cave nightclubs. In the third interview, Uehling and Tinana recall Uehling's attempt at running for Clark County, Nevada Sheriff in 1994 and memories of confronting police while managing their business properties. Finally, they discuss managing Bright Pink Literature bookstore (later known as Get Booked).

She is a writer and editor, focusing on the Las Vegas entertainment scene, with by-lines in many local and national publications.

Radio interview with Lee Plotkin and Alan Stock on KXNT-AM 840 radio on August 27, 2002. This interview was collected by Dennis McBride as part of the Las Vegas Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Oral History Project. The interview took place over the radio on KXNT-AM 840. Plotkin and Stock discuss Question 2 with the radio host, and take phone calls from listeners both for and against the ballot measure.
