Scope and Contents

The Racket sub-series (1926-1952) contains advertising and publicity, financial, legal, production and direction records, and a screenplay. Based on Barlett Cormack's play of the same name, director Lewis Milestone and producer Howard Hughes released The Racket on June 30, 1928.

Advertising and publicity records include bound volumes of newspaper clippings, advertising instructions for publicity agencies and publishers, and an honorable mention from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Financial records include rental and earning reports for the film. Legal records include Louis Wolheim’s actor agreement and the story’s film rights. The screenplay is a synopsis of the film from Bartlett Cormack. The production and direction records are primarily black-and-white photographic prints and negatives depicting the interior and exterior sets, and Lewis Milestone directing.

Segment by unknown San Diego newstation on the expanding population, real estate, and economic upturn that Las Vegas is experiencing. Video opens with a Stardust Hotel and Casino craps game, while a voiceover describes Las Vegas as "Lost Vegas" and "Lost Wages" but that tourists and locals live together side-by-side. Reporter explains the population is rapidly growing, and many Californians and San Diegans are moving to the city, as it rebrands from "Sin City" to a reasonable, welcoming place to live. The reporter explains that many casinos were "in the red" and how it was in a economic downturn. However, many new casinos are being expanded or new ones built now that the economy is looking up. Features many shots of the Stardust Hotel interior and exterior. Original media VHS, color, aspect ratio 4 x 3, frame size 720 x 486.

Description

Inside the Stardust Hotel and Casino, there are several card tables and chairs present in the room. On the far wall, there are intricate gold wall-hangings of different card suit shapes. The carpet underneath the tables has a reddish diamond pattern. This color photograph was taken prior to the renovation of the hotel in the mid 1970s. Two hotel guests in the casino area of the Stardust Hotel stand with their backs to the change counter on the right. The men are looking at something to the left that is out of view. Employees stand behind the change counter but their faces and bodies are blurred. The color photograph was taken before the casino was renovated in the mid 1970s. Description

Four construction workers complete various tasks for the Stardust Hotel renovation. The man closest to the camera seems to be measuring or cutting a piece of wood, while two men on a scaffold balance near wires in the ceiling. A fourth worker uses a shovel towards the back of the room. An alternate view of this room can be seen in Image 0052 pho024209.
