UNLV Libraries Collection on Casino Game Protection

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection on Casino Game Protection includes resources on casino security dating from 1975 to 2004 compiled by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Special Collections and Archives. Materials include published reports related to casino security, gaming legislation, and gaming controls. It also contains information from surveillance information network reports, including the Griffin Book by Griffin Investigations, and other sources that document persons who committed offenses in casinos. The reports were designed to assist casino operators in spotting cheaters, advantage players, and scam artists.

The Nevada Nurses Association Photograph Collection (approximately 1980-1990) is comprised of seventy-six photographic slides, and six color photographic prints that depict the Nevada Nurses Association conference held at the Sahara Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection also includes black-and-white negatives from the 1986 Legislators' brunch in Las Vegas, Nevada.

[DEACCESSIONED] Collection is comprised of personal and community photos collected by Stan Armstrong dating from the 1940s to the 2000s. The collection also consists of photos of the historic Westside neighborhood of Las Vegas, Nevada and its African American community. Also included are promotional posters from Stan Armstrong's documentaries and memorial service programs of members of the African American Community.

The Carolyn Merriam Collection on the Sands Hotel (1972-1998) consists primarily of Sands Hotel merchandise and ephemera, including mugs, glassware, playing cards, dice, an ashtray, and a tote bag. The collection also contains several framed photograph reproductions depicting Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1950s and 1960s. The Sands Hotel operated in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1952 to 1996.

Abstract

The Walking Box Ranch Collection (1880-1979, bulk 1930-1945) contains digital images compiled by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Public Lands Institute. The collection consists of images of the Walking Box Ranch (Searchlight, Nevada), the Mojave Desert, and the Bell Family, consisting of American film stars Rex Bell, Clara Bow, and their children. There are also candid and professional photographs of Rex Bell and Clara Bow taken at various locations, some of which include friends and other family members, as well as a large number of unidentified film stills from Rex Bell movies. Images in this collection are from Bell family photograph albums and assorted prints, and were reformatted into digital images by the UNLV Public Lands Institute.

The Steve Bourie Collection of Casino Brochures (approximately 1970-1992) contains brochures advertising casinos predominantly located in Nevada and throughout the United States that were featured in Steve Bourie's book, American Casino Guide. The collection includes brochures for dozens of casino hotels, riverboat casinos, off-reservation casinos, as well as some general tourism guides.

Willis B. Smith Collection on Western Airlines

The Willis B. Smith Collection (1958) on Western Airlines consists of two news releases from Western Airlines about the company's history and two letters to Willis B. Smith. The collection describes the founding of Western Airlines and its early flights from Salt Lake City, Utah to Los Angeles, California. It also contains a color photograph of a Western Air DC-10 airliner in flight.

The Florence DeVinney Krolak Photograph Collection (approximately 1930-1979) contains photographic prints of the Casino Monte Carlo in Monaco, the Boulder (Hoover) Dam with local dignitaries, and Harley E. Harmon and Frank DeVinney (Clark County Assessor). The collection also contains one publicity photograph of Neil Diamond and some images have corresponding negatives. Frank DeVinney was an assessor for Clark County, Nevada.

The William N. Thompson Photographic Slide Collection (approximately 1955-2002) consists of color photographic slides of gaming establishments in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In addition to images depicting the interior and exterior of casinos, the photographs also include maps showing legal gambling in different regions, and images of brothels, racetracks, hotels, in the United States and internationally.
