Oral history interview with Dr. Roberta Holton conducted by Wendy Park on November 20, 2006 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Holton reflects upon her 28-year career as a teacher and administrator with the Clark County School District. She discusses challenges that she faced in obtaining a teaching position, and some of her biggest challenges that she faced after being hired as a teacher and eventually principal. She also describes challenges that she faced in opening schools within the school district, and offers suggestions on how to be an effective principal and school administrator.
Oral history interview with Judith Ann Allaire conducted by Tracye Ann Collins on March 10, 1980 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Allaire discusses her education, growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, and politics in Nevada. Allaire also discusses the various job titles she has held, such as medical social worker, secretary, cocktail waitress, drug counselor, dancer, and teacher.
On March 30, 1976, collector Margaret Stambro interviewed schoolteacher and registered medical stenographer, Judith L. Hamblin (born June 11, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada) in her home in Henderson, Nevada. This interview covers the history of Henderson, local schools and teachers, and Helldorado. Also during this interview, Mrs. Hamblin discusses her fondness for Lake Mead, the Basic Magnesium Plant, Nellis Air Force Base, and the early aboveground atomic blasts.
Oral history interview with Timothy Harney conducted by Sherrae Chesmore on February 26, 2006 for the Public School Principalship Oral History project. In his interview Harney discusses his experiences as public school teacher and principal in Southern Nevada. He also talks about what a typical day for a principal is like and what the expectation of teachers and principals are.
Nancy Master grew up in a little town called Greenville in Western Michigan. Her dad was in middle management at a refrigerator company and her mother was a librarian and a teacher. Nancy and her two sisters experienced an idyllic childhood, climbing trees, riding bikes, and swimming in Baldwin Lake. School and church were important activities in Nancy's life. When she first went to college, she was sent to Michigan Girls' State, but switched to the Michigan State campus and found that she liked that much better. During the summer of 1967, Nancy and some friends got involved in the Civil Rights Movement. They went to Mississippi to teach and ended up experiencing an intimidating visit from the KKK. Nancy taught school in Jackson, Michigan, and also continued with her own schooling. She took time off to work on her dissertation and was eventually hired to teach history at University of Wisconsin. Since there were so few openings for history teachers, she decided to take a library degree. She and her husband Larry and their daughter came to Las Vegas in 1980 at the suggestion of Nancy's uncle, a doctor who had established a practice here. Larry was hired at Roy Martin Junior High, and in February of 1981, Nancy was hired to teach library skills classes at UNLV. When Nancy first came to UNLV, she worked the reference desk. She became interested in faculty politics and was soon on the senate. She served on the executive committee under Bill Marchant, Sheryl Bowles, and others. Eventually she took over the chair position herself. These days Nancy works with the history and political science colleges. She does some teaching and proctors for students taking UNR classes on the UNLV campus. Her outreach community work includes Habitat for Humanity and mentoring projects for children-in-poverty. Nancy considers UNLV the great love of her life, after her family.
Oral history interview with Theron Goynes conducted by Catrina First on April 11, 2002 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Goynes reflects upon his career as a teacher and administrator in Nevada’s Clark County School District (CCSD). He discusses his experiences becoming a teacher as an African American man during the 1950s and 1960s, and his early interactions with Native American students in Arizona. He then describes the process by which he joined CCSD in the 1960s, and quickly became an administrator. He describes his regular responsibilities, his experiences with school integration, and his efforts in maintaining working relationships with students, staff, and parents. He also offers suggestions for individuals interested in pursuing school administration.
Oral history interview with Ann Clark Kanie conducted by Lois Goodall on March 20, 2014 for the West Charleston Neighborhoods: An Oral History Project of Ward 1. Kanie discusses her career as an elementary school teacher and teaching at schools such as Lincoln Elementary in North Las Vegas, Nevada and at Howard Wasden Elementary. Kanie also talks about her memories of growing up in Las Vegas and about how teaching has changed.
Oral history interview with Pablo Macias conducted by Elsa Lopez, Monserrath Hernandez, and Claytee D. White on December 07, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Pablo Macias was rasied in the small town of Carlin outside of Elko, Nevada. His father and mother met in Ogden, Utah where his father was working on railroad in Nevada and Utah. After finishing high school, he got a job at Elko Blacksmith Shop, where he learned to weld. After attending Northern Nevada Community College, he enrolled and graduated from UNR. After graduation, he took a position at Von Tobel Middle School in 1990 teaching Spanish and Physical Education. While working as a Spanish teacher in Rancho High School he enrolled in a Master’s program at Nova Southeastern University, completing the program in education administration. He currently serves as the Associate Director of Corporate Work Study Program Operations for Cristo Rey St. Viator College Preparatory High School. Subjects discussed include: Education, Rancho High School, Von Tobel Middle School, Barrick Mining, and Cristo Rey.
