Abstract

Oral history interview with Mozella Sheds Scott conducted by Claytee D. White on November 30, 2010 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Scott discusses her childhood in Friars Point, Mississippi, and aspects of rural life. She then described moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1965 and taking a job as a laundry presser and distributor. Scott compares life in Mississippi to the Westside of Las Vegas, describing the Bonanza Village area, employment of the black population, and churches in the area. She also discusses her employment while attending Nevada Southern University, now University of Nevada, Las Vegas, as well as her first position in education and libraries. Additionally, Scott discusses racial discrimination her husband faced in his job at a titanium plant. She concludes by describing her work to improve literacy and education in her community with organizations including, Upward Bound, Community Adult Learning in Libraries (CALL), Parent-In-Charge, and Word on a Rock.

Oral history interview with Jim Bradstreet conducted by Jean Lewis on March 8, 2003 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Bradstreet discusses his upbringing and first job teaching in New York in 1962, before becoming a principal at Southern Cayuga Central School in 1974 and retiring in 1987. He then discusses how he became superintendent of the Mineral County School District in Nevada, his personal philosophy to educational administration, and pressures that he faced as an administrator. He also discusses his job duties, and provides suggestions for individuals considering becoming principals and administrators.

On March 15, 1981, collector David Glasco interviewed card dealer, Alexander Grayson (born March 27th, 1952 in Durham, North Carolina) in his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. This interview covers the black experience in Las Vegas. Mr. Grayson also discusses prejudice, racism, education, and entertainment. Additionally, he recalls relocating to Las Vegas from North Carolina with his family when he was a child, as his father was in the Air Force.

Oral history interview with Gilbert and Edythe Katz Yarchever conducted on February 13, 2006 by Michael Geeser for the I Remember When: Recollections from Jewish Las Vegas Leaders Oral History Project sponsored by the Congregation Ner Tamid and the Las Vegas, Nevada Centennial Committee. In this interview, the Yarchevers talk about their roles in World War II and their involvement in the early history of Jewish temples in Las Vegas, Nevada. Edythe discusses her first husband's work on desegregation and her efforts in Holocaust education.

Abstract

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Dean of Libraries Records (approximately 1994-2017) consists mainly of subject, budget, committee, and research files from Patricia Iannuzzi who served as Dean of UNLV Libraries from 2005 to 2017. The records in this collection cover topics including the Libraries' budgets, planning for the Health Sciences Library, and general space planning. The collection also includes Ianuzzi's research files on information literacy and general education. Also included in this collection are working files and correspondence from Myoung-ja Kwon who previously served as Associate Dean and Interim Dean of UNLV Libraries before retiring from UNLV in 2001.

Oral history interview with Mary B. Kieser conducted by Ronald Gray on February 27, 1979 for the UNLV University Libraries Oral History Collection. In this interview, Kieser discusses her early life and moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1953. She remembers teaching at the Nellis Air Force Base Elementary School and being a substitute teacher in the 1960s. Kieser talks about insufficient funding for education, the implementation of a double session school model, and the increase of students in Southern Nevada. Lastly, Kieser discusses teacher wages, staggered session school models, the development of sixth grade centers, and the teacher credit union.
