The sign was painted by Chloe Lisle's stepfather and was placed 30 miles down the highway toward Las Vegas, in the vicinity of Lathrop Wells, Nevada. The sign says, "30 MILES TO BEATTY THE NEVADA GATEWAY TO DEATH VALLEY [NOT LEGIBLE]. It then names off many of the businesses in Beatty such as hotels, garages, clubs, and cafes. This picture is particularly valuable because it provides a listing of many of the businesses located in Beatty at the time.

Ralph and Chloe Lisle dancing to the band Bearcat and the Lisle Brothers in Beatty, Nevada. Ralph Lisle was a Nye County Commissioner and the brother of Celesta Adelaide Lisle Lowe, the first director of UNLV Libraries Special Collections.
This home was built in the 1920s for Billy Wilson. Transcribed from the notes attached to the picture, "House built by Luther Wilson and W.W. (Billy) Wilson (?) they never had to buy any materials-got them all from Rhyolite."
