Description

Oral history interview with Emmanuel Ortega conducted by Monserrath Hernandez, Maribel Estrada Calderon, Elsa Lopez, Barbara Tabach, and Laurents Bañuelos Benitez on 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Emmanuel Ortega was born in Artesia, California and was raised in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico before moving to El Paso, Texas with his family at the age of thirteen. In 1998 his family relocated once again from El Paso to Las Vegas, Nevada where his father joined the Carpenters Union. They settled in Green Valley and he began attending a hybrid community college and high school program allowing him to obtain college credits. He continued at the College of Southern Nevada for two more years where he was a photography major and later transferred to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) where he studied art history. He moved back to Las Vegas in 2011 where he began teaching at UNLV and received a PhD in Ibero-American colonial art history from the University of New Mexico in 2017. He is the co-host of the podcast "Latinos Who Lunch" where hosts discuss pop culture, art, and issues of race, sex, and gender in the Latinx community.

Irene discusses her personal history, her culture and family traditions, and her previous employment. She also talks about her time in Las Vegas and how she came to be a representative for District 42 in the Nevada Assembly. Local news segments report on the Stardust Hotel's Lido show's final performance. The show closed after 59 years. Dancers, showgirls, and other previous cast members gathered at a local bar to pay tribute to the show including a brief clip with Donn Arden (show producer). The segments note that it will be replaced by a new show at the Stardust that will include Bobby Berosini and his organutans, as the Stardust is "heading in a new artistic direction." Some of the segments include a brief history of the show, with black and white stills from previous performances. Valda Esau, a former performer, speaks on the show's history. Ted Lorenz, the new "Enter the Night" producer, speaks on the new show, and Linda Anderson, a showgirl, speaks on the sadness of the "Lido" show ending. Oral history interview with Jaki Baskow conducted by Claytee D. White and Stefani Evans on October 14, 2024 for the Game On! The Oral History of Las Vegas Sports project. In this interview, Baskow recalls arriving in Las Vegas, Nevada from New Jersey in 1976. She shares her early years running her own talent agency, and how her first client was Suzanne Sommers. Baskin recalls various businesses, business associates, and clients over time; and shares her thoughts on brand building, representing clients, and serving on the Super Bowl Host Committee. Baskow remembers how the Vegas Golden Knights became closely integrated into the Las Vegas community after the 1 October 2017 shooting. Lastly, she credits Oscar and Carolyn Goodman for their envisioning of Las Vegas as a sports town. Digital audio available; no transcript available.

Description

Al Rivero, Chief Bailiff for District Court Judge John Mendoza, grew up with John Mendoza in West Las Vegas during the 1930s and 1940s. They played together on the famous 1944 Las Vegas High School football team that was so good it made Ripley's Believe It Or Not. Rivero was Mendoza's bailiff for all of the 23 years that Mendoza served as a District Court Judge.
