Abstract

Oral history interview with Willie, James, and Jamet Jones conducted by Robbin McLaurin on March 05, 1980 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. The Jones’ discuss discrimination and the limited jobs that the hotel industry offered to black people. They then discuss the importance of the black community and how Las Vegas, Nevada changed throughout the years.

The Personal and Business materials include papers from Flora Dungan's high school and university years, her business papers while practicing as a public accountant, papers pertaining to her personal finances, investments, and personal life, including her divorces, illness, and death. The high school materials include several reports bound with red ribbon that were written and illustrated by Dungan, along with her high school yearbook and several report cards. Her university degrees and honors are included in this portion of the collection.

Included in the Investment file are items pertaining to her automobile, personal property taxes, and the care of her aging father.

Description

On March 1, 1980, Ken Pyatt interviewed his grandmother, Merna Dennison (born September 9th, 1917 in Blanding, Utah) in her home in Henderson, Nevada. During the interview, Merna pinpoints Cashman Field as a landmark of Las Vegas. She recalls the Helldorado Parade as one of Nevada’s biggest annual celebrations in which her family attended and participated on numerous occasions. She mentions serving on the Clark County School Board and discusses the growth of the city of Las Vegas, particularly the development and expansion of both McCarran Airport and the Strip.

Description

On March 20, 1978, DeeAnn Coombs interviewed Robert M. Fisher (born 1945 in Las Vegas, NV) about his experience growing up in and living in Southern Nevada. Fisher first discusses his background and upbringing, from being born at Nellis Air Force Base to attending several schools in Las Vegas and joining the U.S. Navy. Fisher also talks about the development of Las Vegas, particularly the Strip properties, and the various recreational activities in which he would participate, such as water skiing, drag racing, and skydiving. Fisher also talks about his work at the Nevada Test Site, including his work as a draftsman for the underground atomic testing.
