Description

Black and white photograph of the March 1960 meeting at the Moulin Rouge Hotel Coffee Shop to end segregation on the Las Vegas Strip. City officials and NAACP members met to eliminate segregation in public accommodations and jobs and discuss calling off demonstrations on the Strip in the City of Las Vegas and Clark County, Nevada. From left to right: Woodrow Wilson (NAACP), Lubertha M. Warden Johnson, Bob Bailey (NAACP), Clesse Turner (County Commissioner), Butch W. E. Leypoldt (Sheriff), Hank Greenspun (Las Vegas Sun), Dr. James B. McMillan (President of the NAACP), Oran Gragson (Mayor), Dr. Charles I. West, Ray K. Description

On a wooden stage decorated with a platform and a red, yellow, orange, and blue backdrop, entertainers perform the opening number, Act 1: "Las Vegas U.S.A. Today," of the show Pzazz! 70 staged by Donn Arden at the Desert Inn Hotel, Las Vegas. Posed across the stage are both female and male performers dressed in a Western fashion. The women, dressed like cowgirls, are clothed in sparkling, white two-piece costumes complete with white, rhinestone-studded cowgirl hats and either a full pair of glittering fringe chaps, a half pair of flared chaps, white belts, or arm cuffs. Dressed like cowboys, the male performers are wearing white pants with white bandanas tied around their necks, and either have white jackets adorned with rhinestones on or similarly decorated wrist cuffs.

Male and female performers stand across the stage as a crowd of people watch from below. The female performers are dressed in a varying array of pink and white outfits, sporting everything from sparkling silver two-piece costumes with elaborate gold headdresses to long white or pink ruffled dresses. The men are predominantly wearing glittering pink and gold tuxedoes with matching gold top hats. There are white doves flying above the performers and audience.

Scattered across the stairway and stage are multiple female performers clothed in elaborate dresses, made of everything from light pink or teal feathers to sheer silver or blue fabric. The male performers are wearing suits colored varying shades of blue that are either solid in color or are covered in a detailed pattern.

Handwritten notes about costume design such as "Would suggest white silk shirt for finale," are on both sides of the drawing, and a swatch of fabric is attached on the top left corner.
Costume Details: A male dancer wearing dark blue leather boots and light blue elastic pants and a matching velveteen bolero with gold fringes on the shoulders; a gold long-sleeved taffeta shirt is worn underneath, and gold embellishment is attached to the front of the pants and bolero.

Description

Several organizations unite in solidarity to support the Frontier Strike in December 1990. Supporters holding signs, banners, and flags march and pose outside the Frontier. There are also photos of police officers and firemen outside the hotel. Culinary Union secretary-treasurer Jim Arnold is in multiple photos, posing with groups and individuals, shown on stage at a rally, and at a Christmas party. Also included in this folder are: photos of Frontier owners Margaret and Tom Elardi, a portable bathroom decorated with signs and a large rodent, and a clip from an article stating, "DESERT SOLIDARITY, OUR LINE IN THE SAND." Banners and signs in the photos read: "Aloha from Hawaii, local 5 here, Hawaii's people support Frontier Strike," "Frontier Hotel, on strike, Culinary Workers Union, Bartenders Union, Teamsters Union, Operating Engineers Union, Carpenters Union," "AFL-CIO Desert Solidarity," "We're here!
