The Hughes Tool Company series (1912-1990) encompasses the administrative, financial, and legal management of Hughes Tool Company. Materials within the series depict Howard Hughes' control of the company; his film, aeronautics, electronics, and real estate ventures; and his lawsuits and United States Senate hearing. The series also includes research reports on the corporate history of Hughes Tool Company and its subsidiaries, copyright histories for films Hughes produced, and correspondence from Hughes' associates searching for reels of Hughes' films domestically and internationally.

Howard Hughes (left, in dark coat) noted designer, builder, and industrialist entering the hull of the Hughes Flying Boat, the largest airplane in the world, as it was nearing completion on Terminal Island in the Los Angeles Harbor. With him is Joe Petralli, assistant director of service and flight.

Description given with photo: "Subpoena Served On Hughes, Washington: A subpoena ordering Howard Hughes to produce the records and files of the Hughes Too Co. is served to him by Francis D. Flanagan, assistant chief investigator for the Senate War Investigating Subcommittee. It was issued by committee chairman Senator Homer Ferguson and served in the Senate Caucus Room, Aug. 8. Credit (ACME) 8/8/47."
