The caption reads: "The camera is the eye of the mission." And to see that the eye is in good working order Captain Ursal P. Marshall, 522 South Furth St., Fulton, N. Y., rides along on D-Day. Captain Harvell is Photographic Officer of one of the veteran Liberator Groups which is now commanded by Colonel John H. Gibson of Hinsdale, Illinois. This photograph was taken shortly before reaching the target, in initial wave of heavy bombers on D-Day, June 6, 1944."

The Castaways Hotel and Casino: photographic film

Description

An exterior view of the Castaways Hotel and Casino. A marquee advertises Open now all new rooms", "air conditioned", "pool". The Castaways was a hotel and casino in Paradise, Nevada that operated from 1963 to 1987 on the Las Vegas Strip. The property had originally been San Souci Auto Court, an early motel which opened in the 1930s, and developed into Sans Souci Hotel in the 1950s. In 1962, the resort became Castaways Hotel & Casino. The hotel had a 1,500-gallon aquarium in its bar. In 1967, the Castaways was sold to billionaire Howard Hughes for $3 million dollars. The resort operated until July 1987, when it closed and was demolished and the property was purchased by Steve Wynn. The resort became the Mirage, opening on November 22, 1989. The property is located at 3400 South Las Vegas Boulevard Las Vegas, NV 89109.

Abstract

The Carolyn Merriam Collection on the Sands Hotel (1972-1998) consists primarily of Sands Hotel merchandise and ephemera, including mugs, glassware, playing cards, dice, an ashtray, and a tote bag. The collection also contains several framed photograph reproductions depicting Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1950s and 1960s. The Sands Hotel operated in Las Vegas, Nevada from 1952 to 1996.
