Salinas-Menjivar, Mayra
Mayra Salinas-Menjivar’s tenacious spirit has given her confidence from a very young age. She was six years old when she boarded was on a plane from El Salvador to Los Angeles. Her companion was a woman she did not know and was not related to. All Mayra knew was that this woman would be the friend who would reunite her with her mother. This one life episode is part of the framework of attorney Salinas-Menjivar and her ability to explain the difference between child trafficking and a companion.

Frassmann, Dorothy, 1931-
Dorothy Frassmann was born October 29, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York. Right before her parents divorced while she was five, Frassmann moved to Canada to live with her great aunt. She moved back to the United States when she was ten years old because World War II started. She met her husband, Lewis, when she was 15 and he was 20 or 21; they married only a month after meeting each other in Texas. After a series of turmoil between Frassmann and Lewis, they got divorced less than a year later. She was left to support herself in Hubbard, Texas at the age of 15.

Dr. Tony Miranda grew up in Santa Maria and Santa Barbara, California. His father was a chef at the Santa Maria Inn, and the rest of the family spent summers picking strawberries in the surrounding fields.

Garside, Sherwin Frank, 1915-1986
Journalist and photographer Sherwin "Scoop" Garside was born in Tonopah, Nevada in 1915. He was the son of Frank Garside, an owner of many newspapers, including the Las Vegas Review, which became the Las Vegas Review-Journal in 1929. Sherwin Garside moved to Las Vegas, Nevada when his father purchased the Las Vegas Review in 1926. Garside graduated from Las Vegas High School, where he earned the nickname "Scoop" writing for the school newspaper, The Desert Breeze.

Schoeman, Thomas J.
Thomas J. Schoeman was born May 18, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York, and was the first of his four siblings to graduate high school and attend college. Schoeman attended Nassau Community College and then transferred to the University of New Mexico in the early 1970s, from which he graduated in 1974. After spending his first five years out of college working as an architect in New Mexico, Schoeman received a job offer from Jack Miller and Associates (later, JMA Studio) and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1979.

Jones, Clifford Aaron, Sr., 1912-2001
Nevada Lieutenant Governor Clifford "Cliff" Jones was born in Long Lane, Missouri in 1912. While he was attending the University of Missouri in 1931, his family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. During summer breaks from college Jones worked alongside his brother, Herbert, on the construction of the Boulder (Hoover) Dam. Jones moved to Las Vegas in 1937 after he became an attorney.

Houghton, Fred B., 1894-1977
Fred Houghton was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 27, 1894. Houghton attended the University of Chicago Law School, and passed the Illinois State Bar examination at the age of 25. He received his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1919. The next year, Houghton opened his own law practice and maintained the law firm until 1943, when he moved to California.

Jaeger, Bernice, 1934-
Bernice Smith was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 27, 1934. She married Ivan Jaeger in 1955. He and his family were involved in the underground gaming industry in the Midwest. When it shut down in 1961, they moved to Las Vegas where Ivan worked first as a dealer and later in various executive gaming positions. Bernice was one of the fist students to attend Clark County Community College (later Community College of Southern Nevada) when it was founded in 1971. She earned a liberal arts degree in 1973 and a degree in hotel administration in 1974.
