Abstract

This collection is unprocessed. See Access Note for additional information. The Robert MacKenzie Papers (approximately 1940-2000) contain the personal papers of Robert MacKenzie and materials documenting the long-term effects of atomic testing. The collection contains photographs, material documenting the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act deals, surveys about veterans and their children with diseases, letters and correspondence, audiovisual material, and original drawings and cartoons of ships drawn by MacKenzie. MacKenzie was stationed on a ship during Castle Bravo, the first in a series of high-yield thermonuclear weapon design tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands, as part of Operation Castle.

Josephine A. Johnson Diaries

Abstract

The Josephine A. Johnson Diaries (approximately 1940-1978) consist of the personal diaries of Josephine Johnson, a homemaker who moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1952. Included in the daily handwritten entries are prices of goods and services, shops and businesses frequented by the family, anecdotes about the weather, and some receipts, notes, and ephemera kept inside the diaries. Also included are two Bibles and a small personal phonebook.

Rita Deanin Abbey Exhibition Catalogs

Abstract

The Rita Deanin Abbey Exhibition Catalogs (1975-1991) are comprised primarily of exhibition catalogs featuring Abbey's art at various museums and international exhibitions including the Palm Springs Desert Museum, the University of New Mexico Art Museum, Biennale Internationale d’Email Laval, and the International Exhibition of Enamelling Art in Japan. The collection also contains invitations to Abbey's art shows at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas as well as a copy of Abbey's curriculum vitae. Also included are select issues of Leonardo, International Journal of the Contemporary Artist featuring artists' notes written by Abbey.

Abstract

The Sheilagh Brooks Collection on Nevada Historical Sites and Museums dates from 1977 to 1983. It contains materials including budgets, planning proposals, agenda, and minutes related to the Nevada State Museum, including proposals to build a state museum in Southern Nevada. The collection also contains National Register of Historic Places nomination forms for sites throughout Nevada.

Bob McCaffery Collection on the Save the Hughes Flying Boat Campaign

Abstract

The Bob McCaffery Collection on the Save the Hughes Flying Boat Campaign (1980-1983) documents efforts by activists to preserve the plane from destruction and its subsequent acquisition by the Aero Club of Southern California in 1980. The collection contains photographs and newspaper clippings about the Hughes H-4 Hercules flying boat nicknamed the "Spruce Goose" from the 1980s.

Frank Scott Papers

Abstract

The Frank Scott Papers date from 1940 to 1984 and contain promotional materials, photographs, and menus from the Union Plaza Hotel; University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) basketball memorabilia; and KRLR TV documentation, correspondence, and news clippings. The collection also contains a scrapbook and photographs of the re-opening of the Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah, Nevada.

Congregation Ner Tamid

Congregation Ner Tamid is the second oldest Jewish synagogue in the Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, founded in 1974. It is the largest Reform synagogue in Nevada, and has been led by Rabbi Sanford Akselrad since 1988. Ner Tamid is home to the Gary and Lynn Kantor Early Childhood Education Center and the Mark L. Fine Judaica gift shop.  It offers youth and adult education, as well as a Men’s Club, Sisterhood, and other social groups. In 2015, more than 600 families were members of Ner Tamid, and the congregation offered over 200 programs and activities in the course of a year.
