Scope and Contents

Records in this series are comprised of administrative and research files documenting the formation of Nevada CURE as an organization and the creation of the Spartacus Project Report from approximately 1998 to 2001. Materials include correspondence between Mercedes Maharis and various individuals, such as attorneys in Nevada representing inmates on legal cases, as well as organizations, such as the Nevada Department of Prisons. Records in this series also includes copies of inmate medical records and copies of the Spartacus Project Report. This series also includes copies of the Las Vegas Tribune which contain specific articles about issues related to the Nevada prison system.

Shelia White oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Shelia White conducted by Irene Rostine on May 24, 2012 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. White opens her interview by discussing her move to Boulder City, Nevada in 1953 with her mother. White then talks about her experiences working for the Southern Nevada Telephone company in the 1960s as a switchboard operator and how she eventually became a low-level customer service manager. She describes leaving the Southern Nevada Telephone company and being hired at the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino. White also discusses the writer Celesta Lowe, the Lowe family, and the MGM Grand fire in great detail.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Gary Sanoff conducted by David Schwartz on June 29, 2015 for the Table Games Management Oral History Project. In this interview, Sanoff recalls moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1979 and going to dealer school to become a craps dealer. He discusses his work in casinos including the Nevada Hotel, the El Cortez, Union Plaza and the Desert Inn. Sanoff then describes his work at the Bellagio as pit manager, assistant shift manager, shift manager, Interim Vice President of Table Games, and director at the time of the interview.

Oral history interviews with Eddie Eliscu conducted by Arnold Shaw between approximately 1986-1987 for the Arnold Shaw Oral History Project on Las Vegas Entertainers. In these interviews, Eliscu reflects upon his career in entertainment, from serving as a social director at Camp Copake, New York to songwriting for stage and film. He describes his upbringing in a non-musical family, his first performances, and the more prominent professional developments of his career.
