Abstract

Oral history interviews with J. A. Tiberti conducted by Claytee D. White on August 17, 2000 and August 24, 2000 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Tiberti begins by discussing his family history and his upbringing in the mining town of Morley, Colorado, and later in Detroit, Michigan. He describes moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1941, where he worked for the United States Corps of Engineers on the construction of Nellis Air Force Base and later established his construction company, J. A. Tiberti Construction Company. Tiberti talks about being a member of the City of Las Vegas Planning Commission, the duties and responsibilities that came with being on the Planning Commission, and describes how a construction company is run. He also discusses his wife, children, and how Las Vegas has changed and grown since the 1940s.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Pat Feaster conducted by Claytee D. White on July 1, 1996 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Feaster relates how her mother made the decision to leave Fordyce, Arkansas for better economic opportunity and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1942. She describes travelling across the country, living in a one-room structure in the Westside of Las Vegas, and attending the Westside School. She discusses her mother's employment at the Red Rooster Restaurant and then at the Algiers Hotel. She talks at length about her own educational journey after leaving school at fifteen, then returning for her GED and later, a college degree after the birth of her fifth child. She discusses how the decision to improve her education helped her develop a twenty-six year career at the Clark County Health District. She also discusses the Fordyce Club and many important personalities in Las Vegas' Black community.

Gay Kauffman Nevada Test Site Papers

Abstract

The collection includes materials from the Nevada Test Site (1955-1967) including newsletters published by the Reynolds Electrical & Engineering Co., Inc. and photographs of Southern Nevada flora, fauna, and archaeology. It also includes photographs of test explosions at the Nevada Test Site, as well as photographs documenting a visit from North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) officials and a visit from John F. Kennedy to the Nevada Test Site. The collection also contains an oversized poster of an atomic explosion and one of a nuclear rocket development station.
