Abstract

Oral history interview with Mike, Fred, and John Pinjuv conducted by Barbara Tabach on May 13, 2014 for the West Charleston Neighborhoods--an Oral History Project of Ward 1. Mike Pinjuv discusses his father moving to Las Vegas, Nevada with his wife and kids in 1917, owning a gas station and grocery store, and later working as a civilian on the Nellis Air Force Base. John Pinjuv recalls owning Las Vegas Sheet Metal and Fred Pinjuv talks about his career in the United States Air Force. All three brothers then discusses moving to the West Charleston area in Las Vegas as adults.

Description

Old stage coach sits next to a bus headed for the Hoover Dam. The side of the coach reads "No. 1 Las Vegas Tonopah Reno Stage Lines," and the back advertising reads "THROUGH SERVICE FROM RENO NEV. TO PHOENIX ARIZ." The bottom of the coach's bumper reads "U.S. Mail." The written inscription with the photograph provided by the donor says "The Start---Pioneering LV Tonopah-Reno Stage"

Description

Willow Beach, Arizona, on the the Colorado River between Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, approximately 20 miles south of Hoover Dam, 1972. Several buildings are visible, including two motels, a possible visitor's center/rental office, and a possible service station. Both Lake Mead and Lake Mohave are part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area administered by the U.S. National Park Service.

Description

Willow Beach Marina, Arizona, on the the Colorado River between Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, approximately 20 miles south of Hoover Dam, 1972. A motel and a possible visitor's center/rental office are visible. Part of the marina is visible on the left side of the photograph. Both Lake Mead and Lake Mohave are part of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area administered by the U.S. National Park Service.

Polk, Leonard, Jr., 1948-

Leonard Polk Jr. was born in 1948 in Monroe, Louisiana. He and his mother moved to Las Vegas in 1949 when he was just two months old. His father worked on the Hoover Dam. Polk grew up in West Las Vegas and remembers the movement to integrate the schools in the city. As a young adult, he joined the Marines and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. Polk began to work for shows in Las Vegas after he finished his military career. He worked for the Aladdin Baghdad Theater and for the MGM Grand Hotel.

Lindquist, Ward A., 1921-1982

Ward Lindquist was born June 7, 1921 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Lindquist family moved to South Dakota in approximately 1925 and to San Bernardino, California in approximately 1938. Lindquist moved to Las Vegas, Nevada between 1942 and 1945 and he began working at the Lake Mead Lodge as a bartender. He later became a captain for the Lake Mead Boat Company that operated recreational boat tours of Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam. Lindquist later became a sheet metal worker at the Nevada Test Site. He died in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 12, 1982.
