Leo Dunbar oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Leo Dunbar conducted by Dennis McBride on June 16, 1986 for the Boulder City Library Oral History Project. In this interview, Dunbar gives a brief history of the Bureau of Reclamation (Bureau of Land Management) and the beginning of his life-long career with that agency, first working on two major projects in Colorado. He then discusses how The Six Companies won their bid to build the Hoover Dam, the establishment of the federal reservation that would house Boulder City, and the growth and development of both the city and the dam project.

Abstract

The Irving Hirshon Photographs are comprised of 55 color slide photographs taken by Irving Hirshon in 1971 of Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, downtown Las Vegas, and the Las Vegas Strip. Hirshon is believed to have taken the slides in the summer of 1971 on a West Coast trip to celebrate his twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

The Sherwin “Scoop” Garside Photographs contain photographs from journalist and photographer “Scoop” Garside from 1907 to 1969. The photographs primarily depict events and buildings in Southern Nevada, including construction of the Hoover (Boulder) Dam, the Helldorado Parade in Las Vegas, Nevada, hotels and casinos, schools, and social events. The photographs also depict the Garside Family, including Las Vegas Review-Journal owner Frank Garside, “Scoop” Garside’s father.

Oral history interviews with Madeline Taylor Knighten conducted by Blanche Uehling on September 17, 1974 for American Association of University Women Boulder City Branch and the UNLV University Libraries Oral History Collection. In this interview, Knighten discusses her life in Boulder City, Nevada in the 1930s and the construction of Hoover Dam. She remembers the Six Companies, Inc. housing, stores, and Boulder City manager Sims Ely. Lastly, Knighten talks about early businesses and the first church in Boulder City.

Abstract

The Ray Cutright Collection of Winthrop A. Davis Photographs (approximately 1929-1939) consists of black-and-white photographic prints with some corresponding negatives and slides of the construction of Hoover Dam and the geographic terrain of southern Nevada during the early 1930s. Included are photographs of the geographic area around the dam site, Black Canyon, and Boulder City, Nevada. Photographs depict the construction of facilities and roads needed for the project.
