Description

Raymonde "Ray" Fiol at her Summerlin neighborhood home. A Jewish Holocaust survivor whose parents were killed in Auschwitz, Fiol was hidden by a Christian family of resistance fighters during her childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, France. She married an American service member, Phil Fiol, in 1957. Upon retirement, the couple moved to Las Vegas around 2003 and Raymonde became active in the local Holocaust Survivors Group.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Stephen Nasser conducted by Barbara Tabach on January 17, 2018 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Nasser discusses being whisked away with his brother from their Hungarian home and sentenced to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland at the age of 13. He also talks about moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1993; and being an international speaker, author, and educator on the Holocaust.

Schuster, Henry, 1926-2014

Henry Schuster (1926-2014), a child survivor of the Holocaust and 20-year resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, established the Holocaust Survivors Group of Southern Nevada in 1995 with his wife Anita. He served as President Emeritus of the Survivors Group, and also as Jewish Lay Leader for Nellis Air Force Base. Schuster’s escape from Nazi persecution was aided by the French humanitarian organization Œuvre de Secours aux Enfants, and he was instrumental in the planning a 50th anniversary reunion for “OSE children” that was attended by 170 survivors from around the world.

Finder, Esther Toporek, 1953-

Esther Toporek Finder was the president and founder of Generations of the Shoah – Nevada (GS-N), an organization based in Las Vegas, Nevada for the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. GS-N's mission is to support local Holocaust survivors and educate community members about the Holocaust and its legacy.

Abstract

The Collection on the Las Vegas, Nevada Jewish Community spans from 1964 to 2006 and is comprised of scrapbooks, genealogies, ephemera, and other material produced by or for the community. The Hadassah scrapbooks date from 1964 through 1971 and contain invitations, photographs, and records of events and fundraising efforts. Material related to various congregations includes bulletins, fliers, correspondence (form letters), photographs, newspaper clippings, and recorded media. The Jewish Genealogy Society records include bulletins, newsletters, and meeting agendas. Also included is a family genealogy.
