Description

On March 27th, 1981, collector Michael D. Taylor interviewed housewife Flora Hannig-Kellar (born January 24th, 1902 in Washington, Utah) in Henderson, Nevada. This interview is Flora Hannig-Kellar’s personal account on growing up in Nevada. She discusses home and family life and local social and recreational activities. During the interview Mrs. Hannig-Kellar also shares some of the poetry she wrote about Nevada and her family, specifically her children and grandchildren.

On March 30, 1976, collector Margaret Stambro interviewed schoolteacher and registered medical stenographer, Judith L. Hamblin (born June 11, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada) in her home in Henderson, Nevada. This interview covers the history of Henderson, local schools and teachers, and Helldorado. Also during this interview, Mrs. Hamblin discusses her fondness for Lake Mead, the Basic Magnesium Plant, Nellis Air Force Base, and the early aboveground atomic blasts.

Description

Drew Casale interviews Carey Burke (b. 1936 in Columbus, Ohio) about his experience living in Nevada. Burke discusses moving to Henderson, Nevada with his family at a young age and eventually living in Las Vegas. Burke also discusses some the occupations he held, including his profession at the time as a passenger service agent for an airline company. He then talks about McCarran Airport and the various airlines in existence over time before talking about the development of the Downtown and Strip areas over time. The interview concludes with Burke describing his casino gaming chip collection, a hobby that evolved from an earlier hobby of coin collecting.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Joseph C. Mattingly conducted by Sean Powers on February 23, 1979 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In the interview, Mattingly discusses moving back and forth between Las Vegas and Reno, Nevada during the 1930s and 1940s before finally settling in Las Vegas in 1954. Mattingly also discusses his life as a sheet metal worker for commercial buildings, Las Vegas Strip hotels, and buildings on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus.

Huffey, Paul, 1938-

Paul Huffey was born 1938 in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1947, Huffey’s father purchased a lot of land in Paseo Park and built a home for his wife and only child. In 1956, Huffey graduated from Las Vegas High School, enlisted in the United States Army Reserve and enrolled in the University of Nevada, Reno. He taught history at Basic High School in Henderson, Nevada for nine years.
