Abstract

Oral history interview with America Recinos conducted by Marcela Rodriguez-Campo on December 7, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project.

America discusses her family history and life in El Salvador, where her father was a union leader and organizer at the height of the country's civil war. She talks about the difficulties of leaving El Salvador with her children and reuniting with her husband in the United States, as well as what brought her family to Las Vegas. America, like her father, is also a union organizer for the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, and she shares her experiences organizing at hotels across the city including the Riviera Hotel and Casino, Sahara Hotel and Casino, Circus Circus, MGM International, Caesars Palace, Bellagio, and various Station casinos.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Stanley Mallin conducted by David G. Schwartz on January 29, 2008 for the Remembering Jay Sarno Oral History Project. In this interview, Mallin discusses his personal history and meeting Jay Sarno in 1940 at the University of Missouri. He describes moving to Atlanta, Georgia with Sarno in the late 1940s to start a tile business. He then talks about their other business building apartment complexes in Atlanta and eventually building the motel Atlanta Cabana in 1958. Later, Mallin discusses selling their business and opening Circus Circus Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada and describes the success it had during its first months of operation. Mallin then talks about eventually selling Circus Circus Hotel and Casino to William Bennett and William Pennington. Lastly, Mallin recalls opening Caesars Palace and his last business ventures with Sarno.

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of Casino Promotional and Publicity Material (1966-2004) consists of clothing, promotional souvenirs, and gambling ephemera from various hotels and casinos throughout Las Vegas, Nevada. These items include hats, shirts, mugs, ash trays, drinking glasses, menus, buckets, keychains, keno supplies, and playing cards. The hotels include Caesar's Palace, Flamingo Hotel, Imperial Palace, Palace Station, Showboat, Castaways, Stardust, El Rancho, Sam's Town, Circus Circus, and Four Queens, in addition to others throughout Las Vegas.
