Knowles, Darville, 1948-

Dr. Darville Knowles was born September 11, 1948 in Miami, Florida. His mother and father were schoolteachers in Dade County, Florida. After their divorce in 1962, Knowles’ mother relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada with her two sons and took a teaching position there. Knowles graduated from college and attended Howard University and Stanford University Medical School and completed his internship at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, Missouri. Dan Wilkes, a family friend and pathologist in Las Vegas, convinced Knowles to look at Las Vegas for job opportunities.

Martin, Donna Giuffe, 1944-

Donna Giuffre-Martin was born November 17, 1944 in Frankfort, Indiana. Her family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1952 as her dad quickly became a radio and television personality. She graduated from Rancho High School in 1962 and worked for various educational organizations that furthered women’s education. She married her husband, George, on March 12, 1988. They both of them spent many hours volunteering with the homeless.

George Thomas Martin III, or simply Tom, was born February 19, 1944 in Hollywood, California. His family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1951 as his father took on a variety of entrepreneurial opportunities. Martin graduated from Rancho High School in 1962 and worked as a secretary. He married his wife, Donna Giuffre, on March 12, 1988. He spent many hours volunteering with the homeless and the elderly.

Kethen, Vincent, 1964-

Vincent Kethen was born October 31, 1964 in Las Vegas, Nevada, the year that desegregation of schools began. Like many African-American children living in the Las Vegas Westside neighborhood, Kethen was bused out of his neighborhood in third grade to attend a white school. In his case, this meant attending John S. Park Elementary School and later other predominantly white schools.
