Abstract

The Tony Wuehle Collection documents the activities of freelance writer, college president, and poker expert Edwin "Tony" Wuehle of Michigan and Las Vegas, Nevada, between the years of 1950 to 2007. The collection consists of copies of Wuehle's regular columns, newsletters, and special articles as they were published in various journals and newspapers, especially those related to poker, the International Home and Private Poker Player's Association (IH3PA), education administration, and religious concerns.

Portrait of Lemuel (Lem) and Johana Compton. Handwritten on back of photo: "Had a ranch in Nye County at Peavine, in the early nineties. Both of these people are buried in the Catholic Cemetery at Austin [in Lander County, Nevada]. Present owner of the Peavine ranch now Charley Keough, nephew of Mrs. Compton. Mrs. Johana Compton in the late nineties or 1900 used to deliver potatoes from Peavine Ranch to [Y?illegible] Canyon and Berlin, Grantsville [both in Nye County] which they raised at Peavine Ranch." Johana Compton, a former Union Army nurse, died whle trying to save the Peavine Ranch from fire in November 1900.

Lincoln Davis from Chicago (left), R.J. Shoemaker from Rochester, N.Y. (center), and J.R. Hubbard a mining engineer from Nevada(?). Mohawk Ledge Mining Company, Goldfield, Nev. Inscription on back of the image reads "I worked for Davis & Shoemaker in office and later at mine after panic hit. This was last work in Goldfield. Shoemaker formerly owned & operated a correspondence school at Rochester NY."

Abstract

Oral history interview with Donna and Gail Andress conducted by Karen Schank on April 13, 2011 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project.

Donna and Gail Andress talk about their early lives and how they each came to live in North Las Vegas (Donna moved with her family from Los Angeles and Gail with his family from Arizona). They discuss city life in the 1930s, places they spent their time as children, their education, and how they met in high school. Donna and Gail recall their marriage and early years as a married couple living apart while Gail served in the Navy as a turret gunner. The couple discuss businesses that operated in the area and shared stories of raising their children in Las Vegas.

This interview covers Henry Clay Davis’s personal life history as a resident of Las Vegas, which includes hunting and fishing. He also discusses employment, the railroad, old hotels, the Davis Dam, and Lake Mead. Additionally, he offers a detailed description of the Helldorado.
