Description
From an early age, Marie McMillan displayed an adventurous sensibility, a characteristic that is revealed in how life unfolded for her. In this multi-part interview, Marie begins with her birth in 1926 California, and continues with stories of her childhood recollections of the Depression era, her longstanding closeness with Nanny, her maternal grandmother, and memories of Old Bent, her paternal grandfather. She enjoys a flirtatious vitality and attends college for a year. However, as World War II begins to infest the U.S., Marie finds herself falling for a young merchant marine named Duke Daly. They marry, have two children, and live a transient life moving about California and Hawaii as he goes to school, then seeks and finds employment in a postwar economy. By the late 1950s, the Daly household is stressed and begin to split time between California and Las Vegas. Marie holds positions that require security clearance and administrative talents. Oral history interview with Otis R. Harris Jr. and Tisha Harris conducted by Claytee White on September 15, 2010 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In their interview Otis and Tisha talk about growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada during a time of racial change. Otis discusses working for the convention and visitors authority, working on economic development for West Las Vegas, and serving as an Assemblyman. Sylvia "Tisha" Harris discusses working as a teacher in Las Vegas for 29 years. Tisha and Otis also discuss how they have remained active in the community and operate Unibex Global Corporation.

Oral history interview with Cathie Millson conducted by Anna Huddleston on June 10, 2014 for the West Charleston Neighborhoods: An Oral History Project of Ward 1. In this interview Cathie Millson discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1984 with her husband and one-year-old daughter. She then discusses having two more children, moving into the Rancho Bel Air neighborhood, and about raising her children in Rancho Bel Air. She details the growth of Las Vegas from a small town to a large city and how revitalization of downtown has brought young people back to Rancho Bel Air to raise their families.

Oral history interview with Gene Collins conducted by Claytee D. White on July 16, 2009 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Collins discusses the job market in Las Vegas, Nevada and delineates his work experience and career as culinary employee, operation engineer, and finally as electrician at the Nevada Test Site. He then talks about becoming a Nevada State Assemblyman and helping to bring diversification, jobs, and businesses to the black community. Collins details the accomplishments of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) during those years and discusses the means by which they were met, including marches and protests.

Oral history interview with Charlene Cox Cruze conducted by Claytee D. White and Karen Schank on August 9, 2010 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. Charlene discusses her early ancestors traveling through the area in the 1850s and her grandparents settling in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1905, the year it was founded. She discusses how she is a registered Cherokee, Daughter of the American Revolution, and Daughter of the Utah Pioneers. She discusses her career as a Las Vegas tour guide and of her memories of the evolution of Las Vegas from a small town to a city with casinos owned by corporations.

Oral history interview with Alex Shoofey conducted by David G. Schwartz on March 13, 2003 for the Remembering Jay Sarno Oral History Project. In this interview, Shoofey discusses his personal history as an orphan in Brooklyn, New York. He describes his experience with casino owner Kirk Kerkorian, opening of the Flamingo Hotel, and the clientele that junkets brought to the Las Vegas, Nevada casinos. Shoofey discusses opening the International Hotel and Casino in 1969 and talks about designing the procedures for operating the casino. Lastly, Shoofey recalls Elvis Presley performing at the International Hotel and selling the property to Hilton a year into its operation.

Oral history interview with Rochelle Hornsby conducted by Barbara Tabach on November 30, 2016 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Hornsby arrived in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1962 when her former husband Len took a position with a local radio station. Her sales talent led her into promotional sales for conventions and she talks about her former husband's and her careers in Las Vegas. For over twenty years she has been a residential real estate agent. She also talks about volunteering with the Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood, and the 25th Anniversary celebration of Israel.

Oral history interview with Saul Willis conducted by Claytee D. White on January 14, 2014 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Willis discusses his personal history and moving from Sondheimer, Louisiana to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1968. He talks about living in West Las Vegas, nightlife entertainment in the area, and community leaders at the time. He then recalls the increase of drug use in the Westside, being incarcerated for a year, and starting an automobile mechanic business. Lastly, Willis discusses his experience with the Las Vegas court system and the continued development of the Westside.
