Aplin Family Scrapbooks

Abstract

The Aplin Family Scrapbooks (1927-1971) consists of four handmade scrapbooks compiled by Hilda Aplin. The scrapbooks contain photographs, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and handwritten captions. The majority of the collection focuses on Hilda and Charles Aplin’s involvement in the Fraternal Order of Eagles and Las Vegas Eagles Auxiliary #1213. Also included is a photograph album that details the family’s activities from 1927 to 1959, including notable locations around Las Vegas, Nevada such as Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, Mt. Charleston, and annual Helldorado parades.

Abstract

The Zelvin Lowman Papers (1938-2001) contain the papers of Assemblyman Zelvin "Zel" Lowman who served in the Nevada State Legislature from 1967 to 1977. Included are court records, publications, correspondence, reports, and newspaper clippings pertaining to his time in office. Subjects include the Clark County School District, school busing, water and air quality issues, capital punishment, medical malpractice, mental health legislation, and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The 2018 addition includes newspaper clippings, awards, citations, school records, photographs, occasional cards, invitations, and extensive material on the Lowman's involvement with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. Also included are books written by Zel Lowman about scouting and the Presbyterian Church.

The George Wingfield Records on the Tonopah Divide Mining Company and Other Holdings (1902-1955) document some of George Wingfield's business interests and holdings, including the Goldfield News and Weekly Tribune, the Tonopah Banking Company, the Tonopah Divide Mining Company, and other mining operations. Materials include invoices, receipts, voucher records, correspondence, assay certificates, meeting minutes, legal papers, and ledgers of stocks and accounts.

The Paul Lavern Cummings Papers are comprised of Cummings' personal papers, photographs, and audiovisual materials dating from 1927 to 2018. Cummings worked as an actor and performed as a female impersonator under the name Lavern Cummings. The majority of the collection documents his career working at Finnochio’s, a nightclub in San Francisco, California. Materials in this collection includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, sheet music arrangements, photographs, digital audio files, and ephemera. The collection also includes interviews and biographical research material about Cummings and other female and male impersonators.

Abstract

The North Las Vegas Bicentennial Committee Photographs and Drawings of Kiel Ranch document the buildings on Kiel (Kyle) Ranch in 1974. As part of the commemoration of the United States bicentennial, the North Las Vegas City Council elected to restore Kiel Ranch, which was one of the first non-indigenous settlements in the Las Vegas Valley. The materials include black-and-white photographs of Kiel Ranch as it was in 1974 as well as architectural drawings of planned renovations to the main house, the Brown House, the foreman's house, and the ranch hands' house.

The photographs also depict events and people in Tonopah and Goldfield, including parades, celebrations, banquets, children, Native Americans, and prominent buildings.

Griffith Photograph Collection (approximately 1950-1970) contains black-and-white and color photographic prints, negatives, and slides of Las Vegas, Nevada including Fremont Street, Helldorado parades, and hotel and casino properties along the Strip including the Sahara Hotel and Casino, the Flamingo Las Vegas, the El Rancho, the Thunderbird Hotel and Casino, and the Hotel Last Frontier. Also included are photographs of Lake Mead Recreation Area and tunnel drilling within and near the Las Vegas Valley, Nevada. Other Nevada locations outside of Las Vegas include Reno, Virginia City, and Crystal Bay, Nevada.
