Description

Governor Russell cutting the ribbon at Scotty's Castle Road. Inscription with photo reads: "A rope held on one side by a dummy burrow [sic] and on the other side by a dummy prospector. Very western and unique. The road from Highway 95 to Scotty's Castle. Pahrump road was 'bumped' off top priority for the Castle Road, 'because Pahrump didn't warrant a road,' one of the Nye County Commissioners said." An unidentified man helps a Miss Universe contestant disembark from a private plane from Wilbur Clark's Desert Inn. Three other contestants pose outside of the plane. The fifth Miss Universe pageant was held on July 20, 1956, at Long Beach Municipal Auditorium, Long Beach, California. Imprint at bottom of photograph: "Official photograph 1956. Miss Universe Beauty Pageant, produced by International Beauty Congress, Long Beach, California,. U.S.A."
