UNLV Libraries Collection of 1983 Hoover Dam Overflow Photographs

Abstract

The UNLV Libraries Collection of 1983 Hoover Dam Overflow Photographs is a series of color photographs that document the historic water overflow at Hoover Dam as seen from the Arizona side of the dam. Taken in August of 1983, this overflow marked the first time the spillways were used during a flood. The spillways were previously tested once in 1941 after the dam was initially filled.

She remembers her father’s involvement in the construction of the Dam, her parent’s membership in the Boulder City Rifle and Pistol Club, and the growth of Boulder City.

Oral history interview with Alda May and George Williams conducted by Jay Brewer on April 09, 1975 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, Alda and George discuss the history of Boulder City, Nevada. Alda describes arriving to Boulder City in 1931 and recalls moving into one of the first homes built there. George then talks about working on the Boulder (Hoover) Dam and describes the various jobs he had at the dam. The two then discuss social life in Boulder City and how it changed as the population increased. Lastly, Alda and George describe their frequent visits to Las Vegas, Nevada and recall the entertainment that the city offered.

Oral history interview with Mike, Fred, and John Pinjuv conducted by Barbara Tabach on May 13, 2014 for the West Charleston Neighborhoods--an Oral History Project of Ward 1. Mike Pinjuv discusses his father moving to Las Vegas, Nevada with his wife and kids in 1917, owning a gas station and grocery store, and later working as a civilian on the Nellis Air Force Base. John Pinjuv recalls owning Las Vegas Sheet Metal and Fred Pinjuv talks about his career in the United States Air Force. All three brothers then discusses moving to the West Charleston area in Las Vegas as adults.

Helen Mott Cecil discusses growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada on the Westside, including seeing the Helldorado parades and Hoover (Boulder Dam). She also discusses working for Farmers Home Association and in the medical care and entertainment industry during the 1930s. She then discusses her divorce and other topics like the atomic bomb testing, the bus system, and downtown Las Vegas.

Oral history interview with Dean Pulsipher conducted by Dennis McBride on August 19, 1986 for the Boulder City Library Oral History Project. In this interview, Pulsipher discusses his early life in St. Thomas, Nevada and Bunkerville, Nevada. He remembers traveling to Las Vegas, Nevada as early as 1905, moving to Las Vegas in the early 1920s, and the significance of the railroad at the time. Pulsipher describes living through the prohibition era, paving the road from Las Vegas to Searchlight, Nevada, and the construction of the Hoover Dam.

Abstract

The Story of Classic Las Vegas Oral History Interviews (approximately 2004-2006) contains video recordings of oral history interviews used for The Story of Classic Las Vegas documentary which was produced, directed, and edited by Lynn Zook. The documentary offers first person historical overviews of what it was like to live in Las Vegas, Nevada from the 1920s to the 1970s. Interviewees for theIndividuals interviewed for the project include individuals who represent a wide range of industries and culture that make up the Las Vegas population including politicians, attorneys, and entertainers. Materials also include a media kit for one of the interviewees Betty Willis which includes promotional materials about the documentary and a transcript of Willis's interview.
