Description

Stalled resort construction and a future demolition project cluster along Las Vegas Boulevard generally between Desert Inn and Sahara. Construction on the Fountainbleau (tall blue building) ceased in 2009, while Boyd Gaming's Echelon Project stopped construction on former Stardust site back in 2008. That project was revived as the Resorts World Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority has scheduled the demolition of the Riviera Hotel and Casino for in summer 2016 to make way for a convention center expansion.

Description

Frontier Strike participants march on the Las Vegas Strip near the Riviera, Hilton, Stardust, and Frontier. Strikers are holding banners, protest signs, and multiple flags, including the American flag. Banners reading "Conquering the Frontier, Culinary Local 226, Bartenders Local 165" and "Service Employees International Union, AFL-CIO, CLC" are prominently displayed. On site is former secretary-treasurer of the Culinary Workers Union, Jim Arnold, and American civil rights activist, Jesse Jackson. Arrangement note: Series I. Demonstrations, Subseries I.A. From the Dennis McBride Photograph Collection (PH-00263) -- LGBTQ+ events and organizations in Las Vegas, Nevada -- Digital images file. Notes from the donor, Dennis McBride: This billboard advertises the Divas female impersonation revue, hosted by noted female impersonator Frank Marino. Marino had been the star of the Riviera Hotel's An Evening at La Cage, which was closed on February 9, 2009. Marino reconstituted his show as Divas and performed it at other Strip venues. The Quad Hotel and Casino was the changed name of the Imperial Palace Hotel and Casino from 2012-2014 after which it became known as the Linq. Slides collected by the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 depict Las Vegas and Clark County during the 1950s and the 1960s. Individual photographs show the Strip, downtown Las Vegas, Boulder City, Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam, and individual hotels (including the Flamingo, Tropicana, El Rancho, Dunes, Sahara, Desert Inn, Stardust, Landmark, Thunderbird, Sands, Tallyho, Riviera, Golden Nugget, Mint, Binion's Horsehoe, Pioneer Club, Fremont, and Four Queens). Aerial shots and photographs of buildings under construction, marquees, and interiors are included. There are also photos of showgirls and the Las Vegas Convention Center. Tray 1 of 3.
