Abstract

Oral history interview with Maxine Buckles conducted by Irene Rostine on September 20, 1995 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN). In this interview, Buckles discusses her life in Boulder City, Nevada in the 1930s and 1940s. She talks about her high school years, working for a bank, and working for the Rheem Manufacturing Company at the Basic Magnesium Incorporated (BMI) industrial complex during World War II. Buckles describes working conditions for women, unions, and security at the BMI industrial complex.

Oral history interview with Agnes Cody conducted by Irene Rostine on February 17, 1997 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN). Cody discusses moving to Nevada in the early 1950s to work as a service representative for the New York Telephone Company. Cody talks about the telecommunications industry at length and describes in detail the transition from manual to dial-based line communication. Cody also discusses being in charge of finding and establishing operating offices for the company throughout the Southern Nevada area.

Burgwardt opens her interview by discussing moving to Henderson, Nevada just after World War II to sell insurance and real estate to the fledgling town. Burgwardt describes assisting her husband with the business and eventually taking over the office when her husband became ill. She discusses the methods to make land suitable for building in Henderson, women in real estate, and life as a working mother.

Martin opens her interview by discussing moving to Nevada in 1963 with her husband and two small children. Martin describes her career with the Southern Nevada Telephone company as a customer service representative. Martin compares the requirements to work for the phone company in New York state with the lesser requirements of Nevada. Martin goes on to discuss her training, salary, and her overall experiences at the telephone company.

She describes the challenges of being a working mother, the housing issues in Henderson, and attending Mormon church services. Hinton also discusses her husband's military and firefighter career. Finally, she describes wages, working conditions, and specifics about her work at the Rheem Manufacturing plant.

Rodriguez discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada from South Dakota to get a divorce in 1959. Rodriguez describes working as a waitress at the Dunes and the Riviera and making a new life in Las Vegas. She discusses her work in the real estate industry and the challenges of being a working mother. Rodriguez also talks about opening her own real estate office, and the demographics of the real estate industry during the 1960s.

Oral history interviews with Mildred Nay Turner conducted by Terry Roberterson and Joanne Goodwin on December 05, 1999 and May 08, 2000 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) on behalf of the Tule Springs Preservation Committee. Turner opens her interview discussing her birth at Tule Springs in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1924. Turner goes on to describe her family's migration history and the establishment of her family's ranch at Tule Springs. Lastly, Turner discusses other families that settled the area around the same time, children's activities, and women's social activities.

Oral history interview with Thomas Rodriguez conducted by Maribel Estrada Calderón on September 10, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Rodriguez discusses how his grandparents migrated from Mexico to Topeka, Kansas. Rodriguez later discusses moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to work for the Las Vegas Clark County Consortium. He mentions the Latino Youth Leadership Program and his college experience. He goes on to discuss his involvement in the Chicano Movement and Hispanics in Politics and describes the lawsuit he filed against the Clark County School District for employment discrimination. Rodriguez then talks about the Rafael Rivera Community Center and describes the growth of Las Vegas.

Liliam Lujan Hickey oral history interview

Abstract

Oral history interview with Liliam Lujan Hickey conducted by Claytee D. White on September 7, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Hickey speaks about working on building her educational “village” and the challenges of building in East Las Vegas, Nevada. Hickey discusses her early life in Cuba and life in Cuba before and after the Castro regime and her husband’s decision for both of them to flee Cuba for the United States. She also describes arriving in Las Vegas in 1964, working in real estate, and selling homes to the Cuban community. Hickey details her work with the Latin Chamber of Commerce and her involvement with Career Day at the Latin Chamber. She later discusses being elected to the State Board of Education. The interview ends with Hickey speaking on the neighborhoods she lived in and the political climate in 2018.
