Abstract

The Francisco Arcaute Photographs (2004-2006) contain monochrome and color photographic negatives of various exterior environs, signage, and events around Las Vegas, Nevada and Southern Nevada taken by Chicago, Illinois-based photographer Francisco Arcaute. The materials include negatives of neon signs located at the Fremont Street Experience, the El Cortez Hotel and Casino, and the Blue Angel Motel. Events represented in this collection include the annual Veterans Day parade hosted by the Veterans Action Group and Christmas markets.

Desert Inn "Black Book" Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Desert Inn "Black Book" Photograph Collection (1955-1969) consists of 36 black-and-white photographs of individuals arrestest for gambling-related crimes in Reno, Sparks, and Las Vegas, Nevada and Oakland, California. The photographs contain information on the verso with name, date of birth, crime(s) committeed, and known aliases and associates and where gathered by Desert Inn security. These types of photographs were widely circulated amongst casinos, particularly after the formation of the Gaming Control Board in 1955 and the Gaming Control Act in 1959. Crimes listed include slot spooner, slot slugger, dice switcher, and hand mucker.

Abstract

The Bill Hughes Photographs (approximately 1980-2012) contains negatives, slides, prints, proofs, and born digital images created by local photographer and photojournalist Bill Hughes for publications including Las Vegas CityLife, Las Vegas Business Press, Las Vegas Weekly, as well as commercial clients. A portion of prints in the collection consist of modeling photographs Hughes took as part of his business. The digital images represent a variety of clients, and feature local bands, DJs, and performers in nightclubs and bars on the Strip and downtown Las Vegas. Also included in digital files are portraits, artistic photographs and self-portraits, and material used for Las Vegas Weekly, CityLife, and Business Press.

Abstract

The Claes Oldenburg Photograph consists of a single black-and-white photograph taken by Patricia Mortati in March 1981 of sculptor Claes Oldenburg. The photograph depicts Oldenburg watching the installation of the Flashlight, which is reflected in a window behind Oldenburg. The Flashlight is steel sculpture created by Oldenburg and artist Coosje Van Bruggen for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas's campus.

The Mark Kernes Pornographic Stereograph Slides (1950-2009; bulk 2001-2009) contains images of adult entertainers on stereograph slides taken by Mark Kernes from approximately 2001 to 2009. Kernes is a retired journalist and author, and former Senior Editor and Chief Legal Analyst for AVN Media Network. The collection also contains a 1950s stereoscope viewer.

The Squires Family Photographs document the Squires Family and the development of the Las Vegas Valley in Nevada from approximately 1860 to 1980, with a bulk of the photographs depicting people and events from 1900 to 1950. The photographs depict the Euro-American settlement and growth of Las Vegas, Nevada; traveling and exploration of Southern Nevada and the Southwestern United States; the Hoover (Boulder) Dam and the Colorado River; clubs and social groups; and the Squires Family, especially prominent newspaper editor and publisher Charles Pember (C. P. or “Pop”) Squires, Delphine “Mom” Anderson Squires, and their children.
