"Las Vegas: Snapshots of History" Photograph Collection

Abstract

The "Las Vegas: Snapshots of History" Photograph Collection is comprised of photographic prints and slides as well as digital surrogates of photographic prints and ephemera representing architecture and events in Las Vegas, Nevada from approximately 1960 to 2017. Materials were donated by members of the Las Vegas community as part of a community scanning day sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities' Common Heritage grant. The majority of the collection documents landmarks in Las Vegas including the Stardust Resort and Casino, The Mint Las Vegas, Fremont Street, and the Desert Inn.

Pahrump Valley High School Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Pahrump Valley High School Photograph Collection (approximately 1974-1976) consists of black-and-white images of students and staff in various locations in and around the Pahrump Valley High School campus in Southern Nevada. Images document sporting events, classroom activities, and campus buildings. Featured in some of the images are football and basketball teams, song leaders, teachers, coaches, and the landscape around Pahrump, including Mt. Charleston from a distance. This collection consists entirely of digital surrogates.

Peg and George E. Crockett Family Photographs

Abstract

The Peg and George E. Crockett Family Photographs (approximately 1940-2008) are comprised of aerial photographs of Alamo Airport (later McCarran International Airport) and the surrounding Las Vegas Valley in the 1940s and 1950s. Photographs of the interior, exterior, and airfield at Alamo Airport document the early stages of what is now one of the busiest international airports in the United States. The collection also contains audiovisual material, which depict events including the Miss Rodeo America pageant and the Sahara Cup boat races on Lake Mead, and locations including Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada and Hoover Dam. A significant portion of the collection consists of photographs of the Crockett family at various events, on family vacations, and their home in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Milt Palmer Photographs

Abstract

The Milt Palmer Photographs (approximately 1950-1991) contain original and reproductions of photographic prints taken by Milt Palmer, a photographer who worked for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, and later under the division known as the Las Vegas News Bureau. Palmer captured celebrities and entertainers performing their Las Vegas shows, athletes in various sporting events, and various political figures. The majority of photographs in the collection are from approximately the 1950s to 1960s and some are signed by entertainers. The collection also includes digital reproductions of approximately half of the images found in the collection.

Abstract

The Leon Rockwell Photograph Collection (approximately 1850-1979) contains black-and-white photographic prints, negatives, and slides, as well as postcards and tintypes. The images portray the lives of the Rockwell family in southern Nevada, their travels throughout New York and the western United States, and their immediate and extended family members. Also included are images of the volunteer and early firefighters of Las Vegas, Nevada, the Rockwell's family cabin at Mount Charleston, Nevada, and the Rockwell family home in Las Vegas. Portions of the images are from the Rockwell family travels across Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and California and depict historic locations such as Cove Fort, Utah; Rhyolite, Nevada; and Pueblo Grande de Nevada.

Abstract

The Pueblo Grande de Nevada Photograph Collection (approximately 1920-1980) contains black-and-white photographic prints, negatives, and slides depicting archaeological sites located in Overton, Moapa, Valley of Fire, Red Rock, Pyramid Lake, Kane Springs, Virgin River, the “Lost City,” and Lake Mead, Nevada. Images display the different stages of digging during the archaeological excavation of Pueblo Grande de Nevada. Also included are images showcasing artifacts uncovered during the excavations, the Saint Thomas, Nevada and the flooding of archaeological sites after the construction of the Hoover (Boulder) Dam.

Roy Baugher Photograph Collection

Abstract

The Roy Baugher Photograph Collection (approximately 1965-1979) contains fifteen photographic prints of entertainment primarily at the Desert Inn, Frontier Hotel, and Stardust Hotel, a copy of Vegas Visitor guide from 1970, and a home movie depicting Caesars Palace, the Las Vegas Strip, Hoover Dam, the Big Horn Trading Post, and Gold Spike Inn on 8mm film and in digital format. The materials in this collection were compiled by Roy Baugher III, an independent scholar and artist from Roanoke, Virginia. Baugher compiled these materials as part of his research on the Tokyo Happy Coats, an all-female band from Japan who performed in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Desert Inn and the Frontier Hotel from 1964 to 1970.

The Ray Tutaj Jr. and Harv Kahn Photographs (approximately 1990-2009) contain photographs and videos taken by Ray Tutaj Jr. and Harv Kahn of the Union Pacific Railroad and trains throughout Las Vegas, Nevada and the southwest region. Tutaj and Kahn were friends who were railroad enthusiasts and hobbyist photographers. Materials include photographic negatives and prints as well as digitized photographs.
