Las Vegas, Nevada Anti-Gay Counter-Protest Collection

Abstract

The Las Vegas, Nevada Anti-Gay Counter-Protest Collection (2001) documents the counter-protests against supporters of Reverend Fred Phelps of the Westboro Baptist Church at their anti-homosexual demonstrations. The counter-protests were held at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus and the Liberace Museum on March 10, 2001. Materials in this collection included a typed excerpt from the journal of Dennis McBride recounting his experiences on the day of the protest. Also included are photographic prints of counter-protestor Joshua Dart at the demonstration, a poster from the demonstration, correspondence between McBride and Dart, and an issue of the Rebel Yell featuring a front page article about the demonstration.

Roosevelt Fitzgerald Professional Papers

Abstract

The Roosevelt Fitzgerald Professional Papers (1890-1996) contain the papers and writings of Roosevelt Fitzgerald, a former University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) anthropology professor and Director of the Ethnic Studies department. Materials include Fitzgerald's educational records, professional correspondence, and documents from his time at UNLV. The collection also contains drafts of his articles on Black history in Nevada and discrimination, newspaper clippings and copies of the Las Vegas Sentinel Voice in which his articles appeared, photographs, and prepared speeches.

The Story of Classic Las Vegas Oral History Interviews

Abstract

The Story of Classic Las Vegas Oral History Interviews (approximately 2004-2006) contains video recordings of oral history interviews used for The Story of Classic Las Vegas documentary which was produced, directed, and edited by Lynn Zook. The documentary offers first person historical overviews of what it was like to live in Las Vegas, Nevada from the 1920s to the 1970s. Interviewees for theIndividuals interviewed for the project include individuals who represent a wide range of industries and culture that make up the Las Vegas population including politicians, attorneys, and entertainers. Materials also include a media kit for one of the interviewees Betty Willis which includes promotional materials about the documentary and a transcript of Willis's interview.

The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Collection (1951-1977) contains publicity books, scrapbooks, community service records, newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, and newsletters pertaining primarily to the Fred S. Pennington post no. 1753 Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Las Vegas, Nevada and the associated local chapter of the American War Mothers organization. The Ladies Auxiliary and the American War Mothers are non-profit organizations that assist in providing support and services to veterans and active service members. This material was formerly known as the Luanna Mitchell Collection.

Abstract

The Downtown Las Vegas Design Drawings (approximately 2011-2014) is comprised of seven design drawings created for select businesses located in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The drawings are colored on tissue and were created by BUNNYFiSH studio, an architectural firm located in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection includes three drawings for a porte-cochère at the D Las Vegas hotel; drawings for the exteriors of the Hydrant Club, Inspire, and HOP Downtown; and an interior drawing for Scullery.

Arturo Amaya Papers

Abstract

The Arturo Amaya Papers (1994-2017) are comprised of photographs and periodicals representing Amaya's involvement with the Latinx community in Las Vegas, Nevada. In particular, the photographs document activities of the Las Vegas Peruvian Cultural Heritage Association that Amaya founded. The collection includes issues of local magazines Amaya was involved with as a creator, publisher, and writer including: El Heraldo Latino, Lesgabit, and Ultimahora. Photographs in this collection document activities of the Las Vegas Peruvian Cultural Heritage Association, parades at Las Vegas Centennial Park, activities at the East Las Vegas Community Center, anniversaries of the Independence of Peru celebrated at Sunset Park and on Fremont Street, and the International Food Folklife Festival for Clark County.

Nevada Southern University Football Scrapbook

Abstract

The Nevada Southern University Football Scrapbook (approximately 1960-1968) contains one scrapbook with newspaper clippings highlighting Nevada Southern University's (NSU) men's football team, the Rebels, during the 1968 season and features players such as Mario Aguero, Bill Casey, John Hall, Jim Mathis, and Jimmy Thompson as well as NSU football coach, Bill Ireland. The collection also contains loose newspaper clippings about NSU football and tickets to the inaugural football banquet.
