Kearns, Ardis, 1922-2000

Las Vegas, Nevada community activist Ardis Kearns joined the League of Women Voters of the Las Vegas Valley chapter in 1956 and was instrumental in the organization's first meeting, held in Las Vegas in 1964. In 1975 she was elected as the League of Women Votes of Nevada president and her motto for the two-year term was "League Does Make a Difference." In addition to her extensive work with the League, Kearns was a member of the Southern Regional District Allocation Committee on Police and Criminal Justice from 1974 to 1977.

Keeler, Dorothy A., 1900-1976

Dorothy Keeler (1900-1976) served as the Chief Deputy County Clerk in Clark County, Nevada in the 1930s. In this position, she issued many marriage licenses to Hollywood celebrities and others who came to Las Vegas to get married. Born Dorothy Alice Vandewerkern in Otego, New York, she married Charles Keeler in Reno, Nevada in 1927. The couple relocated to Las Vegas where Charles Keeler worked for Frank Garside at the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The Keelers later moved to Washington, D.C.

Klein, Freda, 1920-2012

Freda Klein was born on May 17, 1920. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1942, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. By the mid-1960s she was living in Las Vegas with her husband and three children. In 1966 she began her career with the State of Nevada Employment Security Department. She also returned to school, eventually earning a Master's degree at age 49 and a doctorate at age 59. In 1978 she became the head of the Office of the Employment Security Department in Henderson, Nevada.

Perkins, Richard F. , 1915-1996

Richard Fay "Chick" Perkins was born on March 3, 1915, in Overton, Nevada. He participated in his first archaeological expedition at age 17 and three years later formed a partnership with Dr. William S. Park to excavate, save, and record certain Lost City ruins. In 1956, he replaced his father, Fay Perkins, as curator of the Lost City Museum and remained in that position until his retirement in 1980. Perkins died on January 3, 1996, and is buried at Pioneer Hill Memorial Cemetery in Moapa Valley, Nevada.

Pickett, Tamara

Tamara Pickett was born Terry Lee Pickett. As a male, he served as a soldier in the United States Army. Terry finished her transition to Tamara with sexual reassignment surgery in 1996. As Tamara, she is known for her activism in Las Vegas, Nevada, especially her successful campaign for better health care provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for transgender veterans. She was also involved with the Nevada Gender League and The Turnabouts, a transgender support group in Las Vegas.

Pida, Valerie Ann, 1967-1992

Valeria Ann Pida was born on July 2, 1967 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pida was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of thirteen and battled the disease while attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) from 1985 to 1991. Pida was a cheerleader for the Runnin' Rebels basketball team and cheered in the team's NCAA Final Four appearance. In 1991, the plaza outside the north entrance to UNLV's student union was dedicated to Pida. She passed away on November 10, 1992, at the age of twenty-five.
