Abstract

The Women's Research Institute of Nevada Records (1997-2017) document the establishment and activities of the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The majority of the collection represents research files, correspondence, and other working files kept by Joanne Goodwin, professor of history at UNLV and executive director of WRIN from 1999 to 2017. Materials include information about the creation of WRIN as well as its partnership with the National Education for Women's Leadership program to create NEW Leadership Nevada. Digital files in this collection include WRIN and NEW Leadership event photographs and administrative files used for WRIN operations. Digital files also include copies of annual reports and WRIN newsletters. Also included is a copy of Looking Back at Nevada Women, a documentary hosted by Goodwin. The records provide information on the creation of WRIN and the activities, events, and day to day operations of the institute including information on obtaining and maintaining funding for a research institute.

Oral history interview with James H. Rainey, Sr. and Veronica Ross conducted by Claytee D. White on March 12, 2012 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. James H. Rainey, Sr. discusses his summers working in Las Vegas, Nevada before moving from Arkansas in 1961, as well as his work at the Nevada Test Site. Veronica Ross, his niece, talks of moving to Las Vegas in 1965 and her experiences growing up. Details are given on their recent family history as well as the budding African American community and lifestyles during the 1960s and 1970s in Las Vegas.

Baca shares how her agency worked with the City of Las Vegas in the construction and operation of the Healing Garden. Finally, she discusses the book she helped author regarding 1 October.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Robert List conducted by Claytee D. White on December 10, 2018, January 11, 2019, May 3, 2019, May 7, 2019, and June 12, 2019 for the Boyer Early Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Robert List, former Governor of Nevada and Nevada Attorney General, recounts his early life and his summers spent on a family ranch in Northern Nevada. List details moving to Carson City in 1951, eventually practicing law, and recounts various experiences leading up to his political career. He elaborates on the events that happened during and after his term, including his involvement in an operation to clear the Mob out of many Las Vegas, Nevada hotels, such as the Tropicana, the Stardust, and the Riviera. List explains how his term helped Las Vegas move away from the influence of organized crime.

John S. Park Neighborhood Roundtable Discussion with Robert Forbuss, Ina Porter, Sue Ann Porter, John Gubler, Mary Hausch, Judy Smith, and Margaret McGhie conducted by Richard Bryan on December 11, 2008 for the Voices of the Historic John S. Park Neighborhood Oral History Project. In this roundtable discussion, the participants take turns discussing their upbringing in Las Vegas, Nevada and living in the John S. Park neighborhood since the 1940s. The group recalls the deserted surrounding area, Fremont Street, and life during the Second World War. They talk about John S. Park Elementary School, the increase of homes being built in the area, and above ground nuclear bomb testing at the Nevada Test Site.

Oral history interview with Maria Paloma Galvan conducted by Claytee D. White on October 30, 2017 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. In this interview, Galvan discusses the evening of October 1 as a Lyft driver. She recalls hearing gunfire while at the Luxor Hotel and Casino driveway and driving people away from the area. Galvan describes driving a wounded man to Sunrise Hospital and the scene there. Lastly, Galvan discusses the Las Vegas community after the tragedy, and her attitude on gun laws.

Meireis describes the collaboration of strangers, and feeling guilt for not being able to help others as she escaped the venue. Lastly, Meireis discusses her opinions of firearms.

Oral history interview with Tony Moreo conducted by Claytee D. White on September 13, 2007 for the UNLV @ 50 Oral History Project. In this interview, Moreo compares growing up in New York to his life in Las Vegas, Nevada. He explains how he did not perform as well as other students back when he was in school, but then describes a major turning point in his life was when he studied culinary arts in college. In the rest of the interview, Moreo talks about moving to Las Vegas to pursue a career in culinary arts. He discusses staying in various hotels and sampling the food in their restaurants. Lastly, Moreo expresses a desire to see the city remodeled and improve its infrastructure.
