"Dr. Charles West was a prominent African-American figure who worked to advance the cause of civil rights in Southern Nevada.

Charles I. West was born in Washington, D.C. on September 27, 1908. His parents, Dr. Charles and Rebekah West, had four children.

Henry C. Wieking was born January 5, 1906 in Alameda, California. He worked as a draftsman in Oakland, California until 1929, when the United States Bureau of Reclamation hired Wieking to work in Las Vegas, Nevada. He moved to Las Vegas in approximately September of 1929, and he worked on the construction of Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam) and the reconstruction of the Las Vegas Mormon Fort. Wieking died May 25, 1998 in Pleasant Hill, California.

He worked at the Basic Magnesium plant, was the first African American Nevada Assemblyman elected in 1966, and served as president of the Las Vegas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoples.
