Holloway, Simeon

Simeon Holloway was born in Gary, Indiana on December 15, 1920. He worked at a steel mill, and then enlisted in the US Navy at the outbreak of World War II. During his time in the Navy, he was chosen for the Navy's first allblack band, the B-1s, the existence of which was denied for decades. Forty years later the members would receive honorary music degrees. After the Navy, he was an actor in Los Angeles, California from the 1970s to 1985. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1985 and has been a successful investor in Las Vegas residential properties.

Marie Horseley was born on October 13, 1924 in Springdale, Utah. She married Howard Horseley in 1944 and the two moved into the historic John S. Park neighborhood in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Ishman, W. Dean

W. Dean Ishman was born in Bronx, New York and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1995. In 2003, he became the President of the Las Vegas chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. As president he reorganized the NAACP and put effort into recruiting more Hispanic people to the organization.

Waldemar Jackson was born on May 29, 1957 to Charcohe Ann Jackson and Lisele Wall Jackson. The Jacksons were one of the first black families in the West Las Vegas, Nevada neighborhood, Vegas Heights. He grew up facing racial tensions and prejudices.

Jimenez, Henry, 1985-

Henry Jimenez was born in Torrance, California in 1985. His family lived in Long Beach until he was 13. They moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in July of 1998. He completed middle school and high school in Las Vegas. He also attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he was involved in student government and was also a part of the first Latino fraternity on campus. He graduated in May of 2006 and immediately left to intern in Washington, D.C., with Senator Harry Reid.

Kagafas, Yorgo

Yorko Kagafas was born in Columbus, Ohio, got his degree at Ohio State University, served in the United States Navy, and earned a master’s degree in Environmental Planning from Arizona State University.

Kagafas came to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1999. His background complemented his new job which was to implement the Neighborhood Planning Process, a proactive system for Las Vegas communities to express their neighborhood desires prior to a developer coming in with their own agenda.

Joseph, Katherine M.

Katherine M. Joseph was born December 31, 1931 in Oakland, California. She came to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1950 at the age of 19 and was immediately employed at the Elks Club as a dancer and cocktail waitress. Soon after that she joined a dance show as well, which took her to Havana, Cuba for a year.

Kelch, Laura Belle

Laura Belle Kelch was born September 1, 1912, in Cincinnati, Ohio and came to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1939. Before moving West, she attended the University of Cincinnati and pursued a degree in the field of Applied Arts. Kelch later lived in New York City, New York and Los Angeles, California before finally making Las Vegas her home.

Janet Kennedy was born on October 22, 1924 in Stratford, Connecticut. She married her husband Norm in 1946. They moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1963. Janet was a homemaker and had four children.

Kishner, Irwin, 1933-2017

Irwin Kishner was born in 1933 in Brighton Beach, New York and lived there until he was 13 years old, when the family relocated to Miami, Florida. Irwin graduated from high school and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida in 1954 and his law degree from the University of Miami in 1958.
