Scope and Contents

Materials contain photographs of the Reed Family from 1905 to 1949. Materials include photographs of O.K. Reed and his family on their ranch near Hawes Canyon in the Kawich Mountains. Materials also include photographs of cattle on the United Cattle and Packing Company (UCPC) Ranch, as well as photographs of buildings, wells, and structures on the UCPC Ranch. Lastly, materials include settlement sheets from the Tonopah Mining Company to Ed Slavin from 1938 and 1941. Materials may have been donated by the Slavin Family.

Description

On February 28, 1977, collector Steve Gortz interviewed Mike Meade (b. September 16, 1950 in San Francisco, California) about his life in Nevada. Meade speaks about growing up in Tonopah, Nevada before its decline in population, his move to Elko, Nevada and eventually to the city of Las Vegas. Moreover, he talks about the development of the Strip, the differences between Las Vegas and rural Nevada, as well as the changing environmental landscape. Meade also spends time discussing the controversy surrounding the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) dormitory at the time of this interview, the attitude of locals, and his opinion on brothels and prostitution. Lastly, Meade talks about the city’s pollution, the sports and recreation throughout the whole of the state and ends by reading a poem about Nevada from a Bicentennial book.

Abstract

The Mountain West's Yucca Mountain Socioeconomic Project Records (1987-1994) contain reports on the effects to indigenous peoples, flora and fauna, and transportation relating to the deposits of nuclear waste in Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Mountain West studied were Nye, Lincoln, Esmeralda, and Clark counties. Also included are analysis and impact assessments, and an oral history of Ed Slavin, a Tonopah, Nevada resident.
