Abstract

The Ruthe Scott Photographs of Las Vegas, Nevada Hotels and Casinos contain color and black-and-white negatives and transparencies of Las Vegas hotels and casinos from 1960 to 1986. The collection includes the Sahara Hotel, Castaways Hotel and Casino, the Desert Inn Hotel, the Dunes Hotel, the Riviera Hotel, the Sands Hotel, the Silver Slipper Gambling Hall, Tally Ho Grounds, the Thunderbird Hotel, and the Hotel Flamingo. The collection also includes people gambling in Las Vegas casinos and two transparencies of Nevada politician Phil Tobin, who sponsored the bill to legalize gambling in 1931.

Materials depict hotels and casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada from approximately 1940 to 1959. The photographs primarily depict the Desert Inn, El Rancho Vegas, the Flamingo Hotel, the Hotel Fremont, the Last Frontier Hotel, the Riviera Hotel, the Sands Hotel, and the Thunderbird Hotel. The photographs also depict the Helldorado Days Parade in Las Vegas and the parade floats sponsored by hotels.

The Photographs series (1959-1977) consists primarily of aviation photographs. It includes photographs of a United States Air Force Thunderbirds air show; McCarran International Airport, including expansion construction and a Trans World Airline (TWA) jet with bomb damage stemming from a 1972 extortion plot; and assorted events and people, including former president Richard M. Nixon and professional golfer Jack Nicklaus.
