Abstract

Oral history interview with Jimmy Lee conducted by Vanessa Concepcion, Kristel Peralta, and Stefani Evans on May 25, 2021 for Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project.

Jimmy shares his family's history as entertainers and producers in Korea and their migration to the United States when Jimmy was six years old. He talks about their move to Durham, North Carolina and their relocation to Las Vegas, his education, and his current business, mentorship, and philanthropic pursuits.

Description

On a wooden stage decorated with a metal structure that provides steps for the performers to stand on, entertainers perform the finale "New York-A Salute to Duke Ellington" of the show Pzazz! 70 staged by Donn Arden at the Desert Inn Hotel, Las Vegas. Standing in the center front of the stage is a male performer dressed in a prison inspired black and white striped costume that shows off his midriff and has white straps for arm sleeves. Surrounding the man are other various male and females also striking poses for the crowd. The other males are dressed in prison inspired orange and black striped costumes, while the females are either sporting one-shouldered, sparkling orange dresses with matching orange feather headpieces, or a two-piece costume made out of mesh covered in sparkling orange beading and with matching orange feather headpieces.

Oral history interview with Andrea Gardea conducted by Barbara Tabach on June 26, 2019 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. Gardea starts talking about her early life, family, and family history. She explains why she moved to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2002 and why she chose to attend University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After, Gardea describes what happened before and during the Route 91 Harvest festival, what she experienced during the shooting, and her journey in escaping the scene. She talks about the aftermath of the shooting, the trauma and PTSD experienced, and her healing process. Gardea also talks about the making of Engelland’s Vegas Born Heroes Foundation in 2018, what they do, and what they represent. Lastly, she talks about her opinions on gun control and her viewpoint on making peace.

Oral history interview with Anthony Kappenman conducted by Claytee D. White on May 16, 2019 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. Kappenman begins the interview by talking about his early life, childhood, work, and his time in the military. Afterwards, he recalls what he did on October 1, 2017 prior to the Route 91 festival and during the shooting. He describes his journey trying to escape the area, arriving at the airport injured, and his stay in the hospital. Then, Kappenman talks about how he felt about the way the city and first responders had responded during the shooting, and how the community united afterwards. Lastly, he talks about his opinions on gun control, his recovery, and how he felt after the shooting.

Linda Faiss, Helen Foley, and Melissa Warren founded and run Faiss Foley Warren Public Relations and Public Affairs.

Linda Faiss was born in 1943 and first moved to Nevada in 1945 growing up in Carson City. She is currently active with St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, Boulder City Hospital, Nevadans for the Common good and the MOB museum.
