Abstract

Oral history interview with John McKay conducted by Donna Malloy on March 03, 1980 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. In this interview, McKay talks about his experiences living in Las Vegas, Nevada since the 1950s. McKay begins by speaking about his family history, his career in the electronics and engineering field for aerospace, as well as his experiences in two wars. Moreover, McKay speaks about his hobbies of hunting and fishing and his time as a musician around Las Vegas. McKay also spends time going over how the city of Las Vegas has grown and changed, the increase in crime, and the extreme floods in the 1950s. Lastly, McKay talks about the Nuclear Test Site, how casino gaming chips were used as money around the city, how the city of Las Vegas started and the future of the valley. Description

Ashley Hall was born April 3, 1943 in Caliente, Nevada. After high school, he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad at the Nevada Test Site as a cashier and as a signalman. He later attended Brigham Young University and the University of Nevada, Reno. After college, Hall served the City of Las Vegas in significant ways. Notably, as City Manager he was instrumental in the initial development of Summerlin, Nevada. Though he has retired from local politics, he remains active as the President of the Old Spanish Trail Association and as the U.S. Army Reserve Ambassador.

Scope and Contents

The series is comprised of archived captures of websites and social media sites related to the October 1, 2017 mass shooting that occurred at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. UNLV Libraries Special Collections and Archives staff selected websites that represent immediate news coverage of the event from established and alternative news media. The majority of content on these sites is comprised of articles and news stories from local, national, and international news media outlets. Established news media sources include the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Las Vegas Sun, Fox News, The New York Times, and CNN. Alternative news media sources include the Las Vegas Weekly, Buzzfeed, and Truthfeed News. Websites and social media sites were also selected based on the most frequently shared URLs on Twitter related to the shooting in Las Vegas. The websites in this collection were crawled and captured using Archive-It from October 2017 to October 2018.

Description

Architect Paul Senzaki, and artist-illustrator Charlie White III recall their experiences of working in Las Vegas: Paul on Treasure Island, The Palms, Fremont Street Experience, and World Market Center and Charlie on Treasure Island and its successor, TI; New York New York. Architectural historian Alan Hess, who is an expert on Las Vegas architecture, offers historical context and asks pertinent questions. While this interview touches on several iconic Las Vegas buildings, the conversation mostly details why and how Steve Wynn's Treasure Island involved the labors of artists, illustrators, art directors, and designers of stage and screen as well as the those of architects, contractors, planners, and subcontractors.

Abstract

Oral history interviews with Leon Carter Sr., Ruth Jimerson-Carter, Leon Carter Jr., and Herman Jimerson Jr. conducted by Claytee D. White on January 18 through March 18, 2021 for African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. Leon Carter Sr. talks of his childhood, time spent playing baseball after graduating high school, and the various professions he's held including working at the Nevada Test Site, working in construction, and entering the casino industry as a dealer. The Carter Family discuss life on the Westside and their respective histories.
