Abstract

Oral history interview with Karin Sporn conducted by Claytee D. White on May 25, 2023 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Karin Sporn grew up in Germany when her father was a member of Hitler's army. As a young woman, she converted to Judaism, and she shares how it was a difficult path. Much of her study and sacred rituals were done in Israel, and she shares that many signs along the way gave her encouragement, and she learned from others around her in Israel who shared their stories with Sporn. Eventually, her travel business brought her to Las Vegas, Nevada. After selling her and her husband's business, Sporn discusses how she was then free to volunteer for Jewish and civic organizations, and the leisure to sculp and to write her memoir, Just Peek Over the Fence.

Oral history interview with Georgia Adras (b. 1916) conducted by Robin L. Hayes on March 02, 1977 for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project on Early Las Vegas. Adras relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada from Farmington, Utah in 1936. This interview covers education, religion, ad raising a family in Nevada. During the interview Adras also discusses the building of the Boulder Dam, road conditions, grocery shopping in the early days, and the Strip.

During this interview Black discusses early Las Vegas, local schools, homes, friends, family life, the Mormon Church, Mesquite, Indian Reservation, Downtown, Hoover Dam, and Bunkerville, Nevada.

[This collection is unprocessed.] The Las Vegas Jewish Film Festival Records (1990-2023) primarily contain submissions to the Las Vegas Jewish Film Festival as well as marketing, promotional, and press coverage of the festival. Also included are materials related to the creation of the CineVegas Film Festival. The collection also includes records about art projects produced by Joshua Abbey and other ventures he was involved with.

A postcard illustrating young men sitting on the floor playing poker with the title, "A Sunday School Class in the West". The caption on back reads, "This is a jolly group old time Cowboy friends. Sunday is a time of visiting on the western ranches, and the 'latch string' is always out for the strangers. These fellows are not disturbers of the peace as might be inferred from the photograph".

Givens first talks about his family background and then talks about his educational, occupational, and residential histories. He then talks about the various qualities required of individuals who work in the casino industry, his beliefs regarding religion and gambling, and some of the motivations and goals that are present for those within the field of gaming.
