Abstract

Oral history interview with Daniel Van Epp conducted by Stefani Evans on April 19, 2017 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Van Epp discusses his upbringing in Virginia. He talks about his initial interest in architecture, moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1995, and becoming President of the Howard Hughes Corporation. Van Epp recalls the development of Summerlin, the increase of homes being built in that area, and the construction of the I-215 Beltway. Lastly, Van Epp discusses master planning communities and the construction of Symphony Park in downtown Las Vegas.

Oral history interview with Curtis Myles conducted by Claytee D. White and Stefani Evans on March 16, 2017 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Myles discusses his childhood in Las Vegas, Nevada and growing up in the Westside. He recalls his employment at McCarran International Airport, the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC), and later the Las Vegas Monorail. Lastly, Myles talks about corporate gaming mergers as they apply to monorail transit in Las Vegas, and speaks to the future of monorail transport relative to the airport, Maryland Parkway, and Downtown Las Vegas.

Oral history interview with Tyrone Levi conducted by Veomia Hopkins on an unknown date in the 1970s for the Ralph Roske Oral History Project. Levi discusses the segregation African Americans faced in the areas of housing, education, and employment in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also talks about being the Director of State and Equal Rights Commission and a member of the Congressional Fellowship Program. Levi lastly recalls the above ground atomic tests and how Las Vegas, Nevada changed throughout his lifetime.

Oral history interview with Randall Walker conducted by Stefani Evans on November 02, 2017 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. Walker discusses establishing the first 911 Call Center for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. He then talks of the Downtown Transportation Center, real estate noise disclosures on land west of McCarran Airport, the airport's purchase of 17,000 acres at Ivanpah, building the airport tunnel connectors, construction of the Regional Justice Center and County Jail, and the McCarran International Airport Arts Advisory committee.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Jane Greenspun Gale conducted by Barbara Tabach on January 31, 2018 and February 09, 2018 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. Gale recalls attending Las Vegas High School, desegregation of schools, and what is was like growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1960s. Gale then recalls the anti-war position taken by the Las Vegas Sun, her decision to attend the 1968 Democratic National Convention, and her legal suit against the state of Nevada for the right of eighteen year olds to vote. In her second interview, she discusses the Nevada Test Site, and protests of the 1980s.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Robert “Bob” Agonia conducted by Marcela Rodriguez-Campo on September 6, 2018 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Agonia recalls his community being very diverse, with families sharing Filipino and Mexican American heritage and his neighbors being Japanese Americans. Agonia also discusses the role he played in starting the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) engineering school, and helping start a Minority Engineering Program at UNLV. He then speaks about Latino community involvement in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Oral history interview with Agnes Cody conducted by Irene Rostine on February 17, 1997 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN). Cody discusses moving to Nevada in the early 1950s to work as a service representative for the New York Telephone Company. Cody talks about the telecommunications industry at length and describes in detail the transition from manual to dial-based line communication. Cody also discusses being in charge of finding and establishing operating offices for the company throughout the Southern Nevada area.

Oral history interview with Elmer Hilsinger conducted by Irene Rostine on October 02, 1991 for the Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN). In his interview, Hilsinger discusses working conditions at Basic Magnesium Incorporated plant in Henderson, Nevada during World War II. Hilsinger describes the contributions of women employees, safety rules at the plant, and labor unions. He also discusses daily life in the township of Henderson at the time.
