Description

Oral history interview with Jolie Brislin conducted by Barbara Tabach on April 21, 2017 for the Southern Nevada Jewish Heritage Project. In this interview, Brislin discusses her family background and upbringing in Redwood City, California. She remembers moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1991, her involvement in the Jewish community, and going on a trip to Israel. Brislin talks about joining the Anti-Defamation League, becoming the Regional Director of the organization in 2015, and her mentors at the time. Lastly, Brislin discusses the rise of hate acts towards minority groups across the country, and the issue of cyber-bullying.

Debra Leu interviews his friend, agriculture teacher, Ferren W. Bunker (born June 16th, 1918 in Bunkerville, Nevada) in the Bunker home. In addition to being born in Bunkerville, Bunker has lived in Reno, Caliente and Las Vegas, Nevada. During the interview, Bunker discusses early above ground atomic tests, economic and environmental changes, and his heritage as a native Nevadan pioneer and old-timer. Employment is also discussed, as he describes what it was like working as Clark County Cooperative Extension Agent, in the early days.

Henry Pierzchala interviews Skip Allen (born 1935 in Somerset, Kentucky) about his early experiences in Las Vegas. Allen discusses some of his experience from a position in human resources for the military, as well as working for his father in a business in the area of what is now the Las Vegas Strip. Allen also describes recreational activities, his views on morality while living in Las Vegas, and some of his later experiences in hospitality, specifically in the food and beverage and hotel industries.

Terri Goodsell interviews Carey Burke (b. 1936 in Columbus, Ohio) about his experience living in Nevada. Burke talks about moving to and living in Henderson for a period of time before moving to Las Vegas. Burke mentions a few memorable teachers from his schooling as well as the recreational activities he took part in, such as going to Lake Mead and joining a YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) camp. After mentioning the small odd jobs as a newspaper deliverer and altar boy for the Catholic Church, Burke talks about moving to Las Vegas in 1949 and his eventual schooling at St. Joseph’s Catholic School and Rancho High School. The interview then moves to a discussion on the above-ground atomic testing, including Burke’s and his sister’s experiences with the tests, and he then describes the Helldorado customs and celebrations in earlier days. Berry discusses her progression from being a teacher in Kansas City to moving to Los Angeles and then to Las Vegas, where she worked at Nellis Air Force Base and then eventually to the Fish and Wildlife Service. She also mentions some of the operations of the Wildlife Service as well as her concerns over animal life and natural resources.
