Abstract

The Oran K. Gragson Papers (1955-1998) contain former Las Vegas, Nevada Mayor Oran K. Gragson's professional and personal papers, and include correspondence, files concerning Gragson's tenure as Mayor of Las Vegas, Nevada, arbitration documents from disputes between labor unions and Las Vegas casinos, committee notes, financial plans, and documents from Clark County and Las Vegas government departments. The collection also contains city development plans, environmental reports, political party documents, memorabilia, ephemera, photographs, awards, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks.

Abstract

The Ed W. Clark Photograph Collection contains photographs that depict politicians and businesspeople in Southern Nevada from 1900 to 1975. The photographs depict several Democratic Party members, including U.S. Senators Pat McCarran and Berkeley Bunker, Nevada Assemblyman Harry Edward "Hap" Hazard, and Nevada Governor Edward P. Carville. The photographs also depict political events, including the planting of a tree in the courthouse park of Las Vegas, Nevada, and a parade on Fremont Street in Las Vegas.

Abstract

The Oran K. Gragson Photographs depict Las Vegas, Nevada mayor and businessperson Oran K. Gragson from 1957 to 1981. The photographs primarily depict Gragson at political events with his wife Bonnie and other politicians such as U.S. senators Howard Cannon and Alan Bible, and Nevada Governor Paul Laxalt. The photographs also depict Gragson at groundbreaking ceremonies, Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas hotels and casinos, the mayor’s office, ribbon-cutting ceremonies, and with performers such as Wayne Newton, Sammy Davis Jr., and Lawrence Welk.

Description

Mike Gordon speaks about their liquor stores and lists his occupation as a bartender. Among the civic organizations that he participated in were: Young Democrats, Eagles Lodge, Lions Club, past president of Temple Beth Sholom and B'nai B'rith Lodge. Together Mike and Sallie recall the growth and changes of the valley they have witnessed between the early 1930s and mid-1970s. Among his anecdotes is one about the carrying of payroll checks to Boulder Dam to avoid "interference" (robberies).

Mike and Sallie were among the very first people of Jewish ancestry to make their way to Las Vegas. They arrived January 26, 1932 to join relatives of Sallie?s who had moved to Las Vegas when the Boulder Dam construction began. They had married in 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Soon they were involved members of a small but growing group of Jewish pioneers and helped found Temple Beth Sholom, the community?s first synagogue. Mike speaks about their liquor stores and lists his occupation as a bartender. Description

On August 9, 1984, collector Elizabeth N. Patrick recorded an address by local long time educator, Harvey N. Dondero (born November 12, 1909 in Hawthorne, Nevada) before the Kiwanis Club at the Fremont Hotel in Las Vegas. This address includes Dondero’s observations on the growth of the school system in Las Vegas, Nevada. After the address, Dondero receives a Distinguished Service Award, from the Kiwanis Club of Uptown Las Vegas, as a token of appreciation for his fifty-three years of dedication to children and youth education in Nevada. Dondero also answers questions posed by audience members, regarding the future of Nevada’s education system.

These handmade and commercially printed signs cover events of particular interest to the Las Vegas, Nevada LGBTQ community, including social events, entertainment venues, political rallies, and Gay Pride events.
