Cashman, James, Sr., 1884-1962
James "Big Jim" Cashman was born to Benjamin Franklin Cashman and Ella Mary Stovall in Ladue, Missouri on December 16, 1884. Cashman moved to Searchlight, Nevada in 1904 and began working a variety of jobs until he opened an automobile garage in approximately 1910. Cashman later sold automobiles and operated in Searchlight until the mining boom halted around 1920. As a result, Cashman decided to move his business to the growing city of Las Vegas, Nevada. Cashman met his future wife, Leah Barker, in Las Vegas and they married in 1923.

Description
Slides collected by the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 depict Las Vegas and Clark County during the 1950s and the 1960s. Individual photographs show the Strip, downtown Las Vegas, Boulder City, Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam, and individual hotels (including the Flamingo, Tropicana, El Rancho, Dunes, Sahara, Desert Inn, Stardust, Landmark, Thunderbird, Sands, Tallyho, Riviera, Golden Nugget, Mint, Binion's Horsehoe, Pioneer Club, Fremont, and Four Queens). Aerial shots and photographs of buildings under construction, marquees, and interiors are included. There are also photos of showgirls and the Las Vegas Convention Center. Tray 1 of 3. Thomas discusses her early life in Thistle, Utah before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in approximately 1931, where her father worked on the Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam) construction. Thomas then talks about her early schooling in Boulder City, Nevada, her experiences as a swing and dance band musician, Block 16 in the Clark Las Vegas Townsite, and her memories of Las Vegas hotels and casinos. Other subjects Thomas covers include Las Vegas entertainers, entertainment venues, and women in the music industry during the 1930s.

Description
On February 17, 1981, Robert Kahre interviewed Chet Carrigan (born 1912 in Texas) about his experience living in Las Vegas, Nevada. Carrigan first talks about his background in construction as well as some of his experiences in the Sheriff’s Posse before describing the major events and changes of Las Vegas that he witnessed. Carrigan also talks about his family, the effects of the Great Depression on the city, the flooding problem, and the building of Hoover Dam. He also describes the first schools in Las Vegas, means of transportation, his laundry business, and his experience on the volunteer fire department. The end of the interview involves a discussion of topics including the first movie theaters, Cashman Field, underground water, the railroads, and Carrigan’s thoughts on the future of Las Vegas.

Wieking, Henry C., 1906-1998
Henry C. Wieking was born January 5, 1906 in Alameda, California. He worked as a draftsman in Oakland, California until 1929, when the United States Bureau of Reclamation hired Wieking to work in Las Vegas, Nevada. He moved to Las Vegas in approximately September of 1929, and he worked on the construction of Hoover Dam (Boulder Dam) and the reconstruction of the Las Vegas Mormon Fort. Wieking died May 25, 1998 in Pleasant Hill, California.
