Description

Oral history interview with Chet Buchanan conducted by Barbara Tabach on November 28, 2017 for the Remembering 1 October Oral History Project. Chet Buchanan begins this interview with a discussion of his move to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1999 after he was offered a job as a radio show host for 98.5 KLUC. He talks about the specifics of his job, including his career background as well as the Chet Buchanan Toy Drive. For this interview, he specifically goes into detail on his coverage of the Las Vegas October 2017 mass shooting and discusses being in San Diego, California at the time, yet still striving to reach people through his broadcast with the help of CBS San Diego. Throughout the interview, Buchanan examines his desire to make a difference in the community with his show and his interactions with the public.

Description

Oral history interview with Sandra Gray conducted by Elsa Lopez and Barbara Tabach on December 13, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. In this interview, Dr. Gray discusses her family history, and describes how her parents are immigrants from Durango, Mexico and moved from East Los Angeles, California to East Las Vegas, Nevada in 1991. After getting her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) she started a behavioral health agency that provided rehabilitative mental health services to children primarily in the foster care system. She went on to earn a master's degree in mental health counseling, a master's in psychology, and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology. She is the founder of Empower LV, which strives for equitable access to sports and tutoring. Dr. Sandra Gray is also the owner and operator of Innovation Behavioral Health Solutions, LLC.

Sign details: Just north of Harmon across the street from the Harley Davidson café, the stretch of the Aladdin property begins. The facade of the building is a pedestrian designed attraction, for it replaces the sidewalk. One must pass along the elaborate array of landscaping, to be confronted by the massive replication of the ancient Persian city, fully realizing it's Arabian Nights theme. Various signage does adorn the Aladdin property, Including a small one sided message board, resembling a miniature pylon, two jumbo LCD screens adorned with text, and entrance signs cover a couple of entrances.

Sign-specific description: The first sign you come upon is a small single sided pylon , which houses a message cabinet, and a channel letter logo for the Aladdin. Two poles rise out of a flowerbed, supporting a purple-faced message cabinet reading about valet and parking service. Incandescent bulbs surround the box along the border. Above that section, Aladdin is spelled in red channel letters, filled with red neon. They are hung upon the remainder of space on the upper portion of the cabinet, which only rises an additional 10 inches or so above the internally lit cabinet. The top of the cabinet is adorned with a three-tiered sculpted steel section mimicking the classic shape of the Persian spire seen so often in the property. Each section is finished in a different color: gold, pink and purple. Two neon tubes run the circumference of the tops of the poles, just underneath the negative Persian spire shape, which supports the internally lit cabinet. Neon tubes also border the tops and bottoms of each section of the sign as well as following the contour of the sculpted edges. This sign faces southwest and is found on the south end of the property and is the first sign you see walking on the property headed north. The first casino entrance is seen north of the previous sign and is above an entrance. The negative space of a Persian arch, preceding the entrance is occupied by a sign which designating an entrance. It is essentially one giant pan channel, with a smaller positive shaped cabinet in the center. Aladdin is spelled in gold polished channel letters with blue plastic faces. Another sign, of this sort, is also further down the face of the building. Translucent red ruby shapes run horizontally across the bottom. As the building steps up in various places, a larger, higher elevation, approximately in the center of the complex, plays host to two LCD screens facing northwest and southwest on the surface of the wall. Above each screen, Aladdin is spelled with larger red translucent letters, backed with white neon. When the light is visible, it creates a halo of white light around the text.

Notes: The only Animation which I see present are in the pan channels occupying the negative Persian arch shape over two of the entrances on the west face of the building. The red plastic jewel shapes chase from either side to meet in the middle.
Sign environment: The Aladdin property lies between Harmon avenue and the Paris Hotel, on the east side of the strip. Headed North from Harmon, on the east side of the street, the pedestrian is enveloped by the properties façade, for it replaces a standard sidewalk. Once inside the path along the façade, it curves to and fro, mostly toward the casino entrances. Tall shrubbery and bushes separate the pedestrian from Las Vegas Blvd, creating a world all to it's own.

Sign - thematic influences: The theme surrounding the Aladdin is centered around the Arabian Nights theme of an ancient Persian city or palace. Restaurants and storefronts are cased in with faux stone facades topped with bulbous towers and Persian spires. The significance lies in the lineage of the Aladdin transformed through the years since its change of management in 1966. It stands today holding the same theme but designed to fit in with the themed mega resorts currently present on the strip. The exterior is completely engulfed in themed architecture but draws references not only to its past self but other desert fantasy themed resorts such as the Desert Inn and the Sahara.

Sign details: Circus Circus is a cluster of signage and buildings located toward the Sahara Boulevard. When approaching Circus Circus on Las Vegas Boulevard from the North or the South the first thing which is seen is Lucky the Clown, the giant, sculpted, roadside pylon, on the west side of the strip where the property is located. From the South as you approach the property A small double backed marquis sign for the Circus Circus is perched atop the corner or the shared and neighboring establishment of the Slots-a-fun's small street side covering. As you make you way past to entrance to Slots of Fun toward the Giant Lucky sign, the impressive porte cochere comes into view. The porte cochere is the centerpieces for the flankings of the electrified north elevation of the low rise Slots a fun building and the Lucky the Clown Pylon. Following the building North and around it's North elevation, and elevated tram track is exaggerated by the striping of red neon and incandescent bulbs. From there you see the letters horizontally along the high rise towers spelling Circus Circus. The rear of the property serves as home to the Circus Circus Manor, an RV park for the recreational motorist to stay in their travels.

Sign-specific description: The first description belongs to the double backed color LED message center. The board is outlined in rose neon leading up into neon scrollwork center-pieced at the very top of the sign by a smiling clown face. Between the message center and reader board are the animated neon words circus circus in channel lettering with red neon. When facing the front of the Circus Circus, the first fixture, which catches the eye, is the dazzling Rudy Coristomo designed porte cochere. The gradually arched cover is of fully cantilevered design, and the entire piece is encrusted with a dizzying array of animated red and white incandescent bulbs. The words Circus Circus are spelled in channel lettering cross the front peak of the low rise arch design. The letters are filled with white animated incandescent bulbs. A backdrop for the porte-cochere is the pattern of incandescent bulbs along the wall of the structure, which supports the porte cochere. Painted in animated bulbs, narrow, intersecting archway designs reach from the ground nearly to the top of the building itself. The effect is nice backdrop, which leads the eye from the wings of the property to the center. Placed just to the left of the Porte cochere is an entrance into the casino. Above the door a neon and bulb encrusted fascia designed clown holds guard to the word entrance spelled in backlit plastic. Flanking the figure itself are animated red and white bulb laden scrollwork. To the right of the porte cochere is a smeller yet equally charming sign representing another entrance into the building. The smiling backlit plastic wall sign, like the previous, holds an arched text of casino which itself sits above the word entrance. It is outlined in blue neon, with animated incandescent bulbs. Two backlit plastic message boards with changeable vinyl lettering join the wall sign. Animated incandescent bulbs form a border around each. Following around to the North side of the building. A continuous stripe of red neon and a stream of incandescent bulbs border an elevated tram path. As it disappears into a higher elevation building, the giant, vertical, red neon letters Spelling Circus Circus can be seen high above along the east elevation of the tower in the near distance. Continuing west you arrive in the rear parking lot where several items of signage reside. At the very west edge of the property a single sided arched backlit panel faces east and is supported by two candy striped red and white poles. Following the striping and forming a border around the arched panel, white incandescent bulbs chase around the entire sign. In a two-leveled section of text, in the very center of the top of the sign, the words Circus Circus and then Entrance below that are spelled in metal channel lettering with exposed red neon on the interior. On either side of the red neon text are the words free parking painted in white. Directly through the gate further in the distance in the Parking lot, the parking garage can be seen highlighted by the vertical channel lettering, in block text the words Free parking on the west elevation and on the north elevation the key circus circus turn of the century lettering spell circus circus lighted with red neon. The words light up in sequence back and forth in animated turn, saying Circus, Circus. Below that Free Parking is also spelled in block text channel lettering, with exposed red neon. Along the north side of the parking lot is Circus Circus Manor, the recreational vehicle park is highlighted with it's own unique signage.

Sign - date of redesign/move: The back-lit plastic message board of Lucky the Clown was replaced with an LED matrix screen. In 1983, the porte cochere was redesigned by Rudy Crisostomo and architect Lee Linton.
Sign - thematic influences: The Circus Circus is entirely encompassed by the theme of the big top extravaganza of the three ring circus. The furiously animated light arrays, sheer magnitude of the number of bulbs, intensity of light, all add to the exciting concept of the circus. The turn of the century fonts, reminiscent of the Barbary Coast block Style, are mostly consistent through out the property.
Sign - artistic significance: This theme was en effort to give a bit more respectable image to gambling originally in the late sixties and early seventies. They would incorporate live aerial acts over the casino floor The unique concept was accented by a higher capacity for staying travelers and more family oriented attractions. The giant backlit sculpted pylon Lucky the Clown sign stood as a standard for size and dominance. The 84 ton steel structure was all internally contained and lit from head to toe and welcomed guests and was on of the most memorable Las Vegas sign experiences. Artistically it was influential on the standard on how a resort could be totally encompassed by a theme to create a unique spectacular for most people as well as retain the brilliance of Las Vega's garish style.

Jim Ratigan Collection on Mike Miller

Abstract

The Jim Ratigan Collection on Mike Miller (1982-2014) is primarily comprised of materials representing Mike Miller's involvement with creating Hey Reb! the official mascot for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) in 1982. Materials include meeting minutes from UNLV's mascot committee, various renditions of Hey Reb! created by Miller, newspaper clippings, as well as printouts of email correspondence from Miller to Jim Ratigan about the story of how he came to create the mascot. The collection also includes a copy of Miller's book, Larry the Last Leaf and a print of his painting, "Drawn to His Light." Also included are copies of programs for Miller's memorial service.
