Description

George Williams interviews Myrtle Banks (b. 1923) in her home while Lucille Bell is also present and occasionally provides additional commentary. They discuss African American history in Nevada, specifically in the context of job opportunities, relationships with whites, and the social and political changes that took place over time. Banks also discusses the riots of the 1960s, changes in crime rates and their effect on perception of safety, constructional increases and population growth, shopping and price changes on various products, and how gambling and entertainment defined Las Vegas.

Scope and Contents

This series, dated 2001-2009, was collected by Peter Collins and includes press coverage, interviews, and media releases about legalized gambling, as well as information dealing with casino establishment in Jersey, a British Crown dependency. The majority of the press coverage and releases relate to the United Kingdom (UK), primarily in relation to the passage of legislation and discussion regarding large casino gambling in metropolitan areas of the UK in addition to Jersey.

Abstract

The William Thompson Collection on International Gaming dates from 1928 to 2016. The collection materials relate to gaming in the British Isles, Europe, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, and North America. The collection contains travel brochures, memorabilia, research notes for William Thompson’s published works, reports on gaming statistics, and photographs and slides from his research trips. Materials also include Thompson's personal collection of gaming industry specific magazines, law review journals, and books with Thompson's personal annotations.

Description

Julie Domonkos interviews Jack Bullock, born 1916 in Gorman, Texas, in his home about his experiences living in Southern Nevada. Bullock talks mostly about his occupations in the gaming industry, some of which included being a dealer both in Las Vegas and other cities. Bullock also describes how Las Vegas and particularly the Las Vegas Strip have changed over the years since the forties when he arrived until 1981, when this interview was conducted. Bullock discusses what it was like working in casinos prior to corporations entering the gaming industry, and he mentions how entertainment has changed over time as well. Bullock’s wife Marjorie is also present during the interview and can be heard providing input on certain questions.
