Description

During Ivanpah Solar's grand opening ceremonies, the project's partners' logos were created with the heliostats to be read from the observation level of Unit 1 power tower. They then recreated the logos so that they would read correctly from the air. These photos were the only aerial images taken over the project site on 13 February 2014.

Dill, David Bruce, 1891-

David Bruce Dill was a physiologist in the study of exercise, sports medicine and applied sciences. His research focused on the effects of temperature exposure, high-altitudes, diet, age and fatigue on the human body. Dill received his bachelor's degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles, California and both his master's and doctoral degrees from Stanford University in Stanford, California. He began his physiology career at Harvard’s Fatigue Laboratory in its inaugural year, 1927.

McMillan, James B., 1917-1999

Civil rights leader James B. McMillan was born in 1917 in Aberdeen, Mississippi and moved to Michigan in 1931 with his family. He finished his high school education in Hamtramck, Michigan where he was the first African-American captain of the football and track teams. In 1936, he opted to enroll at the University of Detroit rather than the segregated University of Michigan. After graduation, he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to attend Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry.

Gregory, Matt, 1921-2000

Las Vegas, Nevada producer, manager, and agent Matthias Gregory Gluchowski (a.k.a. Matt Gregory) was born November 21, 1921 in Araucaria, Parana, Brazil. He was the son of an aristocratic Polish diplomat serving as Ambassador to Brazil. Matthias was raised in southern Poland on a large estate that bordered Czechoslovakia. He was educated at the Marian Fathers Lyceum in Warsaw, Poland, and later came to New York during his father's tenure as diplomat to the United States.

For decades Joyce Elise Straus opened her home, the "House of Straus," to area youth seeking art experiences. That effort included the opening of the School of Creative Thinking in 1976. Her varied artwork is widely collected in the Southern Nevada community. Straus was married for 56 years to Dr. Neil B. Straus. Her son David Straus and his wife Heidi continue the tradition.
