Description

On Tuesday, July 11th, 1995, Margaret Louis interviewed distance learning student, Andrea Chrestensen (born March, 23rd, 1948, in Carson City, Nevada) at Northern Nevada Community College. During the interview Chrestensen discusses nursing education and her job as a school nurse to kindergarten and grade one students. She expresses her aspirations of becoming a nurse practitioner working in emergency rooms in hospitals. She is a fifth generation Nevadan. Her family was one of the founding families of Nevada.

Oral history interview with Dr. Kevin L. Wright conducted by Claytee D. White on July 28, 2021 for African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project.

Dr. Kevin Wright discusses his childhood in Las Vegas and the influential women who have mentored him throughout his life. He talks of his education at the Gilbert Magnet School for Communications & Creative Arts in Las Vegas, his current professional pursuits as a part-time instructor in the College of Education, and his community involvement as a member of both Alpha Phi Omega and the National Service fraternities. Dr. Wright also shares his employment history within University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he previously worked in departments related to residential life, student activities, TRIO Training Institute programs (Talent Search, Upward Bound, and Student Support Service), student affairs, student diversity, and leadership.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. Sandra Carmody conducted by Alyson Jones and Dottie Kulesza on August 3, 2001 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Carmody discusses her personal philosophy of education and how it transformed over the span of her career in education from the late 1960s to 2000. Though the bulk of her career was with the Clark County School District, she discusses general duties and responsibilities of school principals, challenges that administrators face, and her suggestions for successful principalship. She also discusses her family background, growing up in New York before moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to receive teaching certification from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). She then discusses the process by which she began working with the Clark County School District following her certification from UNLV, and how she went from being a teacher to assuming the role of principal.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Juliana Urtubey conducted by Nathalie Martinez and Barbara Tabach on May 24, 2021 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project.

Born in Colombia, Julia was able to immigrate with her family to the United States when she was six years old. The family lived in Chicago, Illinois and later in Phoenix, Arizona. Juliana moved to Las Vegas in 2013 and taught learners with special education needs at the elementary level. In 2021, she was named the National Teacher of the Year, the first Latina and the only Nevadan to ever hold the distinction. Juliana personally received the award from Dr. Jill Biden.

Subjects discussed include: Colombia, Chicago, Illinois, National Teacher of the Year, and bilingual education.

The Alan Cummings Research Files (1974-2004) are comprised of research files compiled by Cummings, an elementary school teacher for the Clark County School District (CCSD) in Southern Nevada. The files represent Cummings's work to persuade the Teacher's Health Trust, the employee benefit plan for the school district, to consider domestic partnership benefits for CCSD educators and administrators. Materials include personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, magazines, and court cases.
