Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. Dolores Glick conducted by Roberta Threatt on November 29, 2003 for the Public School Principalship Oral History Project. In this interview, Dr. Glick reflects upon her career as an elementary and high school principal in New York. She discusses her transition from being an elementary school principal to being a high school principal, and the process by which she eventually became a guidance counselor for Nevada’s Clark County School District. She describes her regular responsibilities as principal, her approach to school administration, and her working relationship with teachers and parents. She also compares working in New York with working in Nevada, and discusses contemporary challenges within schools such as drugs and violence.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Dr. James B. McMillan conducted by Perry Kaufman on April 14, 1972 for the UNLV University Libraries Oral History Project. In the interview, McMillan discusses his childhood in Aberdeen, Mississippi and his parents' experience with racial discrimination. He then talks about his own experiences with racial discrimination while living in Las Vegas, Nevada. McMillan recalls his involvement with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the tension between community leaders and local politicians including Pat McCarran and John Russell. McMillan discusses integration and white power structures and how they affect the Black community in Las Vegas. Lastly, he discusses his relationship with other Black activists and figures in the community, including Dr. Charles West, Bob Bailey, Lubertha Johnson, and Mabel Hoggard.

Description

On February 20, 1979, Keith Thomas interviewed Dr. Holbert H. Hendrix (born 1914 in French Lick, Indiana) about his life in early Las Vegas, Nevada. The interview takes place at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Room 312 of the Education Building. Dr. Hendrix first discusses his personal background and interests, as well as his occupational background in teaching. The two discuss changes at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, including construction, when the university began awarding degrees, and Dr. Hendrix’s reasons for moving to Las Vegas. Dr. Hendrix then describes changes to the Strip and how the hotel industry has changed since he first arrived in Nevada. The two briefly discuss how problems with prostitution may have increased since Dr. Hendrix arrived in Nevada. The interview concludes with Dr. Hendrix contemplating new problems that may arise in Las Vegas as a result of an expected population boom and his hopes that the Nevada state government would invest more into funding for education.
