Description

Transcript of interview with Beverly Mason by Claytee White, December 21, 2012. Mason grew up in West Las Vegas and was part of the school integration movement in the 1970s. Her involvement in the Las Vegas School System has continued throughout her life. In the interview, she discusses her family and faith, and working at the Nevada Test Site. Beverly attended Whittier College in California, where she majored in Biology. She later received her Masters in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix. She brought her experience back to Nevada and went to work for the Nevada Test Site as an industrial hygienist. She chose to leave that job to focus on her family, and found a new career in the School Community Partnership Office as a program manager. She focuses on connecting students with professionals in the science, math, and technology fields to bolster interest in those careers. Beverly has always been involved in her community and her church. Beverly attended the Church of God in Christ when she was growing up, and continues to participate in services today. Her family and her faith are extremely important parts of her life. She is married to Marcus Mason and has a daughter named Cassidy.

Patrick J. Toomey was a reverand and founder of the Guardian Angel Church in Las Vegas, Nevada.  In May of 1966, the Sands Hotel and Casino held a dinner to celebrate him.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Sammie Armstrong conducted by Claytee D. White on March 08, 2017 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Armstrong discusses his early life in Camden, Arkansas and growing up working on a farm. He recalls moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1963, and describes the Westside at that time. Armstrong talks about the businesses on Jackson Street, churches on the Westside, and integration in Las Vegas. Later, Armstrong discusses co-founding a transportation business in the early 1980s, Ray & Ross Transport, and providing transportation for Nevada Test Site employees. Lastly, Armstrong talks about growing his business into one of the largest bus companies in Nevada.

Abstract

Oral history interview with Robert E. Campbell and Patricia K. Campbell conducted by Stefani Evans and Claytee D. White on November 28, 2017 and February 27, 2018 for the Building Las Vegas Oral History Project. In this interview, Robert Campbell talks about the ways his career in public administration blossomed in Southern Nevada. Much of the interview is centered on Lake Las Vegas. Robert shares the strategies employed by the Wednesday morning group of Henderson boosters who met at Saint Peter's Catholic Church and who succeeded in gaining the necessary local, state, and federal approvals to move the project forward. He reveals issues that arose during development. Patricia discusses her relationship with Robert and shares stories of her family.

Oral history interview with Sandra F. Mack conducted by Claytee D. White on March 29, 2018 for the African Americans in Las Vegas: a Collaborative Oral History Project. In this interview, Mack discusses her early life in Seattle, Washington. She talks about her education in home economics, becoming a teacher, and her experience teaching during segregation. Mack recalls moving to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2001, and her involvement with community organizations 100 Black Women, the Las Vegas Branch of The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Urban League Guild, and the local Delta Sigma Theta chapter. Lastly, Mack talks about the 1 October shooting, gun violence, the increase of security at churches.

Oral history interview with Maria Benítez conducted by Monserrath Hernández and Maribel Estrada Calderón on June 21, 2019 for the Latinx Voices of Southern Nevada Oral History Project. Maria Benítez is the image of a hardworking and determined Salvadoran woman. After facing adversity amidst the Salvadorian Civil War she talks about her journey as a nurse in El Salvador and migrating to the United States. Here in Las Vegas, she has worked as a cook on the Strip, been an active member of her church, and supported the education of her children selling pupusas. Subjects discussed include: El Salvador, Salvadorian Civil War, Migration, US Citizenship Documentation, and Judaism.
